Where does this fall? Warning someone of a speedtrap. . .

My wife and I argued about my habit of 'flashing' cars in oncoming traffic to warn of a speedtrap.

Is it against the law to warn someone of a speedtrap? I figure this falls under free speech.

when I was in vietnam, drivers had hand signals to tell them if are any up ahead.

like you head south bound signal to guy drive northbound to see if were back there for him, and up ahead for you.

at night they would flash their lights.

How would they know? Who cares. Here is some advice though, don't flash your high beams behind a truck. I did that once and that crazy fvck turned on this bright ass light that faces backwards like a spolight and shined it on me. Haha. I sped up and got in front of him and he flashed me. To get back at him, I slowed down in front of him enough so that all of the water coming out of the back of my car from the rain would get on his windshield and then I bounced.

bring a huge flying flag like banner that says "SPEED TRAP AHEAD". i think thats legal, but for some reason flashing your beams are not. more stupid state laws for you

if the guy is going at 90mph at 55, he wont see you flashing anyway,. you're doing those who are going at a reasonable 70mph a favor. i say its probably illegal but i dont think there will be cops on the other side of a speed trap to catch the good samaritans.

You obviously have never driven on the highway in hard rain. If you're behind someone you can't see ****** even with the wipers on full blast. There's water flying everywhere. It's really annoying.

A few motorists may have Fred Zahn to thank for the extra money in their pockets today.

Zahn, owner of Renu Auto Body in Madison, noticed a police speed trap on Fish Hatchery Road on Tuesday and decided he didn't much like the concept.

So he wrote "Speed Trap Ahead" on a large piece of cardboard and positioned himself on a nearby sidewalk.

Within 15 minutes, Madison police officers booted him. "They told me it was city property and that I couldn't hold that sign there."

Zahn, who said he's never been caught by a speed trap, doesn't understand why officers didn't welcome his help. "You should have seen how people slowed down when they saw my sign," he said. "(The police) say they're out to slow people down, but you can't tell me it's not about the money."

Madison Police Capt. Cameron McLay said that while officers respect free speech rights, Zahn was interfering with a law enforcement operation and could be charged with obstructing an officer. However, McLay said the department would not be in a hurry to do that.

"We try to keep a sense of humor about these things," he said. "The joke internally was perhaps we should purchase 10 to 12 of these signs and post them around the city."

McLay acknowledged Zahn was slowing down motorists, but he said the goal is to alter people's driving behavior long-term, something a ticket does better.

So it sounds like the police could have a legal avenue to enforcement, citing obstructing an officer. Whether that would actually stand up in court is another question.
