According to HTC's facebook my sensation will be getting it in march. If it does I will be happy but I have my doubts. Really though I dont believe HTC or Google owe me anything. I bought a phone, the software works the hardware is fine, I have no problems with the device. Why do people think they are owed these updates, when xp became vista and then 7 we all had to pay for those os updates nobody expects microsoft to just give them away.

Think of those updates as major bug fixes and optimizations... So yes people do feel owed.

Windows is a paid Operation system while Android is open sourced and free.

Google could charge for android if they wanted to, then you could get updates like Microsoft does with Windows. Then when a big overhaul to the os came out you could go to the web store and purchase it for a hundred bucks. Maybe that system would work better, people have done that with windows for 25 years. But I still don't recall any false promises made about software support when I bought my phone.

I'll tell you this ... if Android can't get rolled out faster than this it will eventually begin to lose market share. And, since Apple is REALLY good at this they will be the biggest winners.

Google, do you want this to happen?

seeing as its been like this since the beginning and no one but nerds on the internet have ever cared and they've sold millions of phones And taken apples share I'm going to go out on a limb and say Google is perfectly fine with how thing are going. Ics updates for the first few phones are rolling out this month and its been what less than 5 months. It isn't that bad

When will we get to the point where can just download the (spec-capable) version of the OS we want (ICS, etc.) and just install it as easily as say Win7 where the OS recognizes the phone/hardware and installs the specific drivers?

I don't want to have to wait for Samsung, LG, etc. to play spin-doctor with the software.

Never?

One reason why these big companies love mobile devices so much is that they take us away from the hardware and software freedom we currently have in the desktop market.

You can do that today- ICS is openly available. Many people install pure ICS ROMS on their devices.

The problem is the drivers in many cases. Hardware isn't standard in phones like it is on computers.

If it wasn't for the drivers for my SGS2's buttons I would be using ICS today.

Yeah my little sister has an android phone because it was cheap. She has no idea what version of the OS it's running and doesn't really care. As long as she can play a few games and text her friends she's happy with it.

I've heard mid march for the Sprint Epic Touch also. It isn't far out of reach, there are leaks every few days and they are on the 10th or 15th leak so far. I've been using it and it is down to just a few bugs to work out.

If I was guessing, the 10th was the plan and they yanked it. Most likely due to the new GPS bug... yes there is another one lol.

Does that affect only the Epic Touch or all Samsung Galaxy phones(including the international ones) on ICS?

I believe just the Epic Touch. I haven't heard of any GPS issues on the GSM versions of the phones.

Yeah I'm not sure. And its just that the GPS won't turn off without a reboot sometimes so its just a software glitch.

Yeah, Android has been slow to roll out since the beginning but in the beginning most didn't know it would remain that way. Now that we have a few years of experience of Apple maintaining a consistent update to ALL iPhone users with phones upwards of 2-years old and Android orphaning ALMOST EVERYONE after about 6 months the pattern is beginning to be understood by "the masses."

When I got the Ip3G in July 2008 iOS did not have cut/copy/paste, but when Apple had worked it out they sent it out to EVERYONE at the same time and that included those that had picked up the first version iPhone some year and a half earlier. If this had been Android with there crappy roll out NONE of the first Androids and few of the new Androids would have received the update -- EVER!

Pretending this is not a problem is a problem in itself as it permits the carriers and makers to justify there failure because, hey, our customers don't care...

Can't compare Apple to android, since 2007 they have released 5 handsets without any sort of custom ui's. Since Htc G1 there have been hundreds of different android handsets with varying levels of customization depending on manufacturer. Only handset you can compare to iPhone is Google's official line of Nexus phones of which two thirds are up to date.

Yes I can compare them and I do! What a load of nonsense that Android should be held to a different standard of support than Apple -- utter nonsense!

I don't care that Apple has far fewer handsets -- I DON"T CARE!

Apple is one company and the Android world is many companies that are only responsible for THERE handsets and are not coding for anyone else.

When an iPhone customer can expect about 2 years of FULL support and years more of partial support and we Android users would be lucky to see 6 months of support and often none at all I think there is reason for those of use with Android handsets to get f'n mad about this. It really pisses me off when apologists make excuses that ultimately reinforce the idea that we accept this situation so the carriers and makers can continue to NOT SUPPORT us.

Now that this lack of support has become an unchangeable fact for Android I am certain that the market share gains Android has made will begin to reverse and it serves the makers right!

I don't think it's that they don't want to support them or simply cannot on their own. It's that they all feel the need to release a new damn phone every 24 hours.

Slow down to a 6+ month release cycle for their cutting edge devices, and I bet you'll see support continue for +/- 18 months (typical consumer upgrade time frame).

Get a Nexus phone if that's what you want. Android is open, when they start controlling things they'll just be Apple now. Just like the iPhone has negatives, that's one of Android's negatives. If people cared so much about it they'd either get a Nexus or not buy Android phones. I prefer choice and Android gives us that. If you want the latest updates get an Android phone. If you don't care about that then it's no big deal. Seems pretty simple to me.
