Where is ICS?

Galaxy Nexus was released in late November 2011. We're at almost end of Feb 2012 and three months later, it's still the only Android phone with ICS. 1% of Android phone is ICS. It's pathetic. ICS is great upgrade and yet people are not going to see it til later this year if they're lucky. Android has been given a free pass til now but I think the good grace period has expired and people want better user experience and faster updates. I think we saw some of that recently with iphone and iOS marketshare gain. I expect that trend to continue as I think there are lot of disgruntled Android users out there ready to jump ship.

It hasn't affected Android yet. I guarantee the general public doesn't even know it exists. The people that care about the most recent Android version either get a Nexus or root their phone.

If you recall back to gingerbread, the Nexus One just got that update around this time last year. So I think people are just getting a bit antsy with ICS. Hell, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola have publicly announced their ICS update plans for their devices. I don't ever recall that happening with gingerbread last year.

used many ics roms on my sprint ns4g. while the animations are fluid and the new features are relatively cool, i ultimately switched back to gingerbread. its faster for me on this phone. i couldn't bear the lag here and there on ics. (it is prevalent on nexus galaxy too but not as bad)

The ET4G has a "leak" ICS ROM from Samsung but it is still early testing so it is rather buggy. But at least I know they are working on it.

It's kind of crazy how a group of people in their spare time are able to port it to a device that was never meant to have it in less time than it's going to take Motorola to get it in phones like the RAZR.

And ICS on my Droid 1 is not too bad actually.

To be fair, that group of people can release a buggy product and work on it post release and it's no problem with us. They don't have to undergo the several month long carrier approval process, and they don't have to report to some kind of management wondering where their time/money is being spent.

Frankly it should be no surprise by now, we've already been through this. You want the latest and greatest versions in a timely manner? Buy a Nexus or a phone that can root/rom (which we do). The vast majority simply don't know (and so they don't care).

the general public KNOWS it exists. That is the problem. They think its exclusive to the Nexus only and think you HAVE to buy a Nexus to get the awesome OS. People are like "Why did you get an SGS2 if there's the Nexus." the SGS2 will be an awesome phone once it gets ICS. The problem is its been 3 months and I'm getting worried.

It takes a while for CM9 to roll out. I don't want to be waiting on a stable CM9 for a long time. Meanwhile it's great on my Nexus S.

Since you have the i9100 you can try the ICS leaks if you want.

Have you tried CM9? It is VERY stable on my i777, only reason I don't use it full time is my version of the SGS2 has problems in calls with the I9100 CM9. Also there is an issue with video, but that is getting fixed:

I have ICS running on my touchpad (CM9 alpha0.5) and desire z (Andromadus alpha v11). Neither are perfect, but I can't imagine going back to gingerbread at this point.

And also, do you do any banking or any activities that are personal on your rooted/custom rom'ed phone?

Heh, I told you all that it would take ~8 months for ICS upgrades to start being pushed out after the ICS announcement. Just like when Gingerbread was announced.

It is not in the carrier's or manufacturer's best interest to update software for old devices that are only at the top end of the market for a few months when they can just sell you a new device instead.

For example, the Droid 3 is far more powerful than the Nexus S, but it's unclear from Motorola's latest roadmap if and when it will get ICS, especially since it's already been replaced by the Droid 4. And it is FAR easier to launch a new phone than update an old one to a new OS.

I agreed with you right up until the last sentence. When you consider everything that goes into a new phone, it is definitely easier to just update the software on the old one. I mean guys that develop as a hobby even get the OS working on the old phones.

Yep. I understand people getting antsy, but it's really not as easy as they think, and releasing an official update is a completely different story from a custom ROM on XDA.

Considering the amount of R&D and certification that goes into verifying that an update doesn't break a users phone (and somehow they all do), I don't really see how it's not easier just to launch a new phone instead.

You give the general public far too much credit, while I'm sure there is a small percentage of the public who fall into the know about ICS catagory. Most Android owners I know don't even know their phone runs Android 'I don't have an Android phone, I have a Motorola RZR" or "I have a Samsung Galaxy" I'd bet the average android owner doesn't even know the Nexus is an Android phone.

Yup...again with tech geeks thinking their knowledge about a particular subject applies to everyone. If you polled 100 random people on the street with Android phones, I'd be shocked if a quarter of them could correctly identify which version of Android their phone was running.

So when Jellybean is out in ~8-9 months from now, cycle will start all over again. It's madness. It wouldn't be as bad if Nexus wasn't locked to timed carrier exclusive contract. I shouldn't have to resort to importing or switching carrier to get Nexus phone. You can say lot of bad things about Apple but they do not do paper launch, and they support and update their products.
