Where is your case?

Just wondering where you guys place your cases. Both of mine on on my desktop.
Which I thought would be SOP. Safe from flood, vermin, dust, dysons, and small fast moving projectiles.
This arrangement also allows for use of the the top of the case for routers, switches, modems
ambient enviromental monitors and small storage devices (my 72"cd rack+ 32oz leaky bigGulp)
But with the placement of venting and i/o on the top of cases it seems like
vendors have other idea of a box's placement. Making my case selection/choices smaller.
So where does your case reside and why do you place it there.

My tower is on the floor, because it's too heavy to lift, much less put on a desk. My laptop is on the desk, as it wouldn't do me much good on the floor.

Mine is on the floor, there's just not enough room on my desk for both of my monitors and my case.

I have a large desk, it is to the right of my monitor.

I like it up and visible, helps to be able see the dust accumulate so I clean it more often.. Also nothing replaces reaching over to feel the exhaust now and again to make sure all is well with the cooling.

I keep my rig on my desk right next to me. I used to have my old rig on the floor, but it would get so dusty down there that when I built my rig, I decided to keep it safe on my desk.

My case is so large that I use it as a desk, and my desk is so small that I use it as a case. My motherboard sits in the right hand top drawer and the wires run down the back to the psu which is positioned on a shelf at the bottom (the hard drive is on the other side). Sometimes I chuck a bucket of ice on the shelves and blow my mates kitchen fan over it for super cool parts. The big advantage to this method is that if the parts get really warm I can always open the fridge that I keep next to the whole shebang (for beer) and turn it on full... the entire room goes to 5c in seconds... I get SOOO cold... but the pc loves it!

Thats what I normally do... but sometimes when I'm overclocking I suspend all my pc components to the fan on the ceiling and whip them round the entire room at 110rpm... with the air conditining on! (You can get an e6600 to run at 4.2ghz using this method *wow*). But I don't normally do this... last time the sata cable came free and my hard drive went through the window. Its a tough drive and it was ok... but thats partly because it landed on my neighbours cat. The cat didn't fare so well.

Anyway, there is a moral to all this...

Its much better to use a case as a case and a desk as a desk.

a second moral is

If you kill your neighbours cat with a hard drive, don't say "yeah but at least the drive is ok"... especially if your neighbour knows kung fu.

My rigs are off the floor, mostly because of dusty conditions.

I agree with Boyo that its smart to keep your computer off the floor. Dust buildup causes overheating.

I have my tower on the floor and under my desk. It has wheels and I can roll it around when I need to open it and change something. I wouldn't want it rolling on my desk, lol.

I don't know how people can stand having a system right next to their monitor anyway but then again I don't understand having case windows and LED fans, etc. I spend most of my time on my computer looking at the monitor... not the case.

My tower is on my desk next to me. Easy access to the drives, my power button/front USB ports are near the bottom of the front, no room under the desk (don't want it right next to my sub!) and also if you have a case with a window why stick it under a desk where you can't see it?

In the late '90's when I bought my first home computer, I bought a so-called computer desk with a hutch on top , drawers, etc. Within less than one year the weight of the 17" CRT caused the desktop to sag, which caused the hutch to sag, which caused the drawers to stick. The tower was in a receptacle in the desk just off the floor.

Then I wised up and bought two very sturdy banquet tables. I have them at right angles in a corner of a room. My ~40 pound steel tower and ~20 pound steel UPS are under one table to the right. That table supports my printer, router, modem, power bars, external HDD, lamp, mouse and my coffee. The height is perfect.

The other table is directly in front of me and supports my LCD, notenook, another external drive and more power bars.

I live alone without any pets. This set up wouldn't be safe with young children or animals, especially the rats nest of cables under one of the tables. If I had to worry about cats and kids, I'd put everything up on the tables, and I would have to get a third one.

Got a computer cabinet which just fit's a mini tower. There's a nice cabinet ontop that I'd have to take out if I ever get a bigger case. Sound wise, it only made a slight difference after I moved it down from the desk top a few years ago.

I've got mine to the left of my desk and up off the floor about 8" on a pair of Rubbermaid footstools (the new gunmetal gray color) - they are less than $10. a pair. Makes it a very convenient height and very stable.

Currently all my PC cases are on desktops. Floor can get pretty dusty at times.

Mine is next to LCD on desk. I am lazy to clean the dust inside the case and my case just looks great every one should have chance to take a good look at it.

I have mine on the desk. I think it looks better there and the dust intake is reduced. The desk is somewhat old but easily strong enough to support it and the 22" CRT next to it.

Dust buildup would be MORE on the floor. esp if you have carpet.

I put tower on desk, plan on doing same with new case, less dust buildup on a clean desk vs carpet and floor that gets more dirt.

I'd want to keep one of those beauties on my desk or on a shelf near the desk ... but on the floor? Too pretty for that.

I keep mine on the floor to the right of my desk for several reasons, both practical and aesthetic:

(1) Old, Spanish Revival style desk is too small to accomodate all my crap: laser printer, cordless phone, keyboard & mouse bases, mouse pad, router and gigabit switches, speakers, Palm cradle, and laptop.
(2) Where it sits on the floor the front of the case is about 18" from my A/C duct in the floor, so my PC is more happy!
(3) My desk is a really nice carved, solid walnut antique that I don't want to fvck-up.
(4) Placement on the is a little more quiet than on my desk, even with hardwood floors.

I keep both of them on my desk next to me. Solid oak desk antique I think, My grandma gave it to me. I'm probably going to refinish the top though. It supports 2 30-40 LB cases and my 19" CRT and an LCD. OH and My laser printer. And my plates and tea.
