Where should I put my 80GB drive?

Compliments of the Hot Deals forum, I got an 80GB 7200RPM drive for my computer. I currently have a 15GB drive (probably 5400 speed) in my PC. Mainly I wanted the extra space to start doing video editting. So here are my questions:

1) Should I move the OS to the 80GB drive since it is faster?

2) Should I make sure the 80GB is a Master drive on the other IDE channel for purposes of speed if I leave the OS on the old drive?

3) Is it better to have the storage of video files on a separate drive from the OS so when programs are running, the memory swap on the OS drive doesn't contend with the video file storage?

Obviously there is ignorance on my part of how exactly the IDE channels and the Master/Slaves work together. So any enlightenment is appreciated.

Thanks.

Please put it in an anti-static bag, place the bag in a box and mail it to my home address.

You always want the faster of the two devices as the master. But going by rpm will not work. Basically just figure the 80 gig is faster. I would just put windows on the 80gig and make it the master. I would just find some other use for the 15gig. This is because if the 80gig is the master, and you install windows on the 15gig, every time windows needs to access some windows files it will have to go through the 80 gig. I really don't think that it would make any kind of noticeable difference in the speed of windows, but I always go for noticeable difference. You could always just put the 80gig on the secondary ide channel as the master. And the 15gig on the primary. Put windows on the 15gig and you should be fine. I dont know what other drives you may have but I always put cd-rom drives last.

No, the drive on which your OS is installed should be set to Master, and anything else to Slave. But if you are going to put the drive on the second IDE channel, then its ok to have it as a master there. I'd recommend setting that 80 GB as a slave to your 15 gigger. That way your cdroms/dvds/etc will have their own iDE channel.

And, yes, move your OS to the 80 gig drive. It will be faster esp. during boot up. If you do this, set your 80 gigger to a master and 15 gigger as its slave.

use the 80gb as a master primary OS drive...transfer your old drive over by something like norton ghost...(xcopy can do it as well, but the replication isn't EXACT, though works fine for dos based OSes, like win9x).

with a drive that big, it's probably a good idea to multiply partition it...the best idea would be to probably do something like this:

1 active primary partition for the OS (around 2gb)
1 to 3 other extended partitions for various data - i.e., one for video data, the other for mp3s and/or programs, etc.

multiple partitions means less memory loss (albeit rather insignificant), and more efficient defragmentation method...i.e. u can fragment your OS drive without having to do the ENTIRE drive...plus it helps to keep things a little better organized, or you can wipe partitions for various reasons without too much hassle, etc...or just use partition magic later if you create a single partition.

i'd like to add that your OS drive doesn't have to be primary, and honestly, it doesn't really matter for the most part whether or not it is since your bios is capable of selecting which device to boot from.

what is error "primary hard disk full" upon bootup?
i updated nav 2001, surfed for a little bit, then shut comp off
came back the next night (friday night) and get this error
pretty sure a virus did it, because it was working fine before i shut it down and the other comp on the network is the boneheads' comp--the ones who click emails titled "this is a virus!"
thy just recently had some sort of crash where their drive filled up
yeah, probably got that magistr or whatever
however i do have recent rescue disks so i will do that
just wanted to make sure that the drive hasn't been tarfed--no biggie if it is--wanted some of it gone anyway

I've tried unsuccessfully to use a partitioned drive in the past, yet I always end up with a screwy setup. For example, I know that the theory is to use, say 2 partions, one for the OS and the other for data, downloads, etc. However, some programs don't seem to run correctly unless they are installed in the primary partition. For example, I've had numerous problems with Adobe Acrobat reader not working, because when I downloaded it, I installed it into my D: drive, but when I clicked on a link which required reader, it wouldn't work. I reinstalled it into the C: drive, and now it works fine. How can I tell where programs need to be installed? Can you install a part of a program in one partition and the rest in a different partition? I'm getting an 80 GB drive for my new computer, and, crazy as it sounds, I'm seriously thinking of keeping it as one huge partition so I don't run into problems like this on my new comp.

TIA for your help folks
