What are you going for Quad 9550 or the Faster, Cooler, Easier to OC E8500 or E8600

@aigo: are you saying that the new steppings on q9550 will oc higher or will they just run cooler??? I ask because most people have not been cpu-bottlenecked when oc'ing 45nm quads but rather have run into high fsb issues. Will apoppin (or anyone else...say, uh, me) be able to get a higher fsb on an e0 stepping?

have any of you checked local hardware stores for E0 chips? i was at central computers in sunnyvale california a few days ago and they had like half a dozen of the Q9550s which had new packaging (red badge, same as Q9650, of which they had 3) alongside older Q9450s, Q9300s, and Q6600s. the prices on them were actually cheaper than newegg to boot. i havent checked any of the frys electronics around here yet though because they keep their CPUs locked inside a cage elsewhere in the store and you have to ask someone to bring them out, let alone bring out a bunch so you can hand pick the one you want. it doesnt help that most of the people who work there are also idiots. i asked about what CPU steppings they had on a few CPUs a while back and the guy behind the counter started citing off model numbers and marketing bullshit like he knew what he was talking about :disgust:

I suspect that it will take several months to clear out the stock of C1 stepping Core 2 Duo/Quads, and that's assuming Intel has fully shifted production to the E0 stepping (that probably a big assumption - I don't know if Intel has given any public guidance on how fast/broad the shift to E0 stepping production will be across their product lines).

Unfortunately, until the supply of E0 stepping CPU's increases, you will probably pay a premium for the guarantee of getting an E0 rather than a C1.

I just checked Newegg, and two reviews posted on 10/1 for the Q9550 have both reported getting SLB8V E0 stepping CPUs.

It's not the same as a guarantee, but it is promising.

OK, I got one!

I bought it from Lagoom.com for $326. Packing date is 9/12/08. It is a little cheaper than Tankguys.com but is well worth it knowing you will get E0.

If you are in the Bay Area, you can order online and pick it up from their warehouse. When you place the order online, make sure you state you only want the product with sSPEC: SLB8V marked outside the box. They are nice and quick to reply.
