i moved here to ny not too long ago. times square is overrated. bright lights, big deal. if you want a good time, good atmosphere (neighborly and homely), try out little italy, east village, around 1st and houston. a good italian place is max on ave. b, or maybe il bagato on 2nd st; for brunch maybe try yuca on 7th, or odessa. odessa has a good $8 brunch on weekends you might like. have fun

ive seen places uptown like duvet, but i hear the service sucks, and youre just paying for glamour type scenery. me, id rather have good service and people around me. your call though

There's this place in the Village...called Fish. They have an awesome steak. Their raw bar is good too. $50 for the steak though :-/

I used to live near Central Park. If you are making ONE visit, and want to impress, go to Tavern on the Green, on the West Side of Central Park. Roughly 67th and Central Park West. Take a subway to Columbus Circle (1,A,C,B,D all go there, but check subway maps for possible changes), exit, and walk up the park for 5-8 blocks (depending upon which subway exit you use). It will be on the right hand side, just after an auto entrace to Central Park.

Be sure to have a reservation (212) 873-3200, and dress up a bit (not essential, but the place is very nice inside, you'll want to look good in your own pictures).

You can always find good restaurants, but there is only one Tavern on the Green.
N.B. - not cheap, but you said you would spend if it was worth it...

Capital Grill has great steaks - but it's a CHAIN for pete's sake. Based in D.C. of all places, and they run up through Boston. Uggh. After all the UNIQUE restaurants NYC has to offer, the likes of which you can't find anywhere in the world, why would you pick one that you can find in a Bostonian suburban shopping center?

OP - if you want steak:
Peter Lugar's in Brooklyn (but I doubt you can get a reservation, maybe for lunch you possibly could with two weeks notice)
Smith and Wollensky - NYC classic, good but a bit of a scene at times after work
Gallagher's Steakhouse near Times Square - a truely classic NYC steakhouse, actually featured in the first "Cannonball Run" movie where they met for dinner in the private room upstairs before the race. Red and White checked tablecloths, lots of hanging meat in the window, and classic service. Not pretentious either but time to miss the pre-theater crowds (I'd go after curtain up - 8PM).

Right in the heart of the city/SoHo area is this amazing Japanese restaurant called "ono". The food is like an orgasm in your mouth...not even joking.

for classic NYC pizza you have several choices:

Grimaldi's (formerly Patsy's, the current Patsy's which won the name in a legal battle is good but nowhere near this) under the brooklyn bridge in brooklyn heights would be #1 on most people's list - youll never eat a pizza quite like this. eat quick though as it cools off fast
Lombardi's is usually considered the first pizza place in NYC (and thus in the USA) and can be found in little Italy at corner of Motts and Spring streets
Totonno's near Coney Island, neptune ave, but thats probably a long subway ride (the oldest pizza place but its only the oldest because Lombardi's changed location once in its history, Lombardis is is still the first)
John's on Bleeker street in the village. the founder of Johns and Totonnos both started out at Lombardis
Di Fara's in Bensonhurst Brooklyn is fantastic - the mix of 3 cheeses here delivers a taste unlike any other, i believe goat mozzarella is one of the cheeses
Joe's pizza on Carmine near bleeker street is considered by some to be the best slice in NYC (and was featured in spiderman 2 at its no longer existing twin location next door on bleeker street) - most of the places above only sell by the pie. if youre getting a whole pie though id go elsewhere
Bleeker street pizza on bleeker street is my favorite slice

Don't fall for Ray's Famous Original Pizza, the pizza is decent but none of them are the original except one and its not really any better there
Two Boots is also well known, but not so great - their catch is mix of Italy and Louisiana thus the Two Boots and the cornmeal crust with spicy sauce

for Italian the disputed best is Il Mulino on 3rd street just south of Washington Square park. but youll need a miracle to do a dinner reservation on Saturday. much easier to go at Lunch. this place is not cheap though but may be worth it for a single visit

little Italy would be a good place for Italian but beware that just because its in Little Italy doesnt mean its good. my current favorite is Angelo's which has been there since 1903. Il Palazzo, Pelligrino's, Il Cortile, and Da Nico are other good choices

for Thai i recommend Holy Basil in the east village, especially if you like masaman curry

Tavern on the Green is a famous NYC institution and is an amazing setting and atmosphere, and the food is good... but definitely overrated and overpriced. its worth the experience once, but im not sure if i can recommend it

note that except for tavern on the green, nothing ive mentioned is near central park.

Two recommendations (both which I've been to), at opposite ends of the price spectrum:
  • Tabla (Gramercy Park). Always one of the highest reviews by Zagat. Sample menu here. Absolutely make reservations. One of the best dining experiences in the city.
  • Sotto Cinque (Upper East Side). Very reasonable Italian, pleasant atmosphere. Reservations not necessary.

I wouldn't classify Tabla as indian.

It's very much American fusion, which would be why I included the sample menu.

This is an excellent review, and has quite a number of photographs if you happen to be more of a visual person, vrbaba.
