Where to find the best pizza in the country?

I miss Chicago thin crust pizza. Cannot find it anywhere outside the area. Deepdish for days, but no thin crust.

NYC generally for Neapolitan and NY style pie. Chicago for pan pizza (see below) and tavern style thin crust.


If one happens to be in Chicago I highly recommend stopping by Pequod's and trying their pan (not deep dish) pizza:

I can see why people like Chicago deep dish pizza. It's acquired taste. It took me couple of tries to get used to it. And when it's freezing cold outside, hot pizza casserole does fill and warm you up.

Zachary's is overrated. It's one of those 'one of a kind you will be amazed' places where you can look for others who say the emperor has no clothes and it's not actually that good.

A favorite of MINE is the seemingly almost unknown Numero Uno chain in southern California. Sweet crust and great.

This was a ridiculous list not including California - I think San Francisco can be in any reasonable top list.

Just around me are some great pizzas - and yes, some 'ok' and some poor pizzas.

Thing is pics don't really do justice to the taste of a pizza good or bad.

Chicago style 'pizza' is delicious, but it's not pizza, it's a casserole.

I ate at a couple places in Chicago when there for work. An acquaintance who'd been living there for years took me to his favorite place. It was one of the big most famous ones, Lou Maliani's or the other. Can't remember the 2nd place we went to. If I make it to Chicago again I'll go for a Chicago 'pizza' joint right away.

zachary's is money, too much money most of the time, but if you're buying we go to zachary's. otherwise, fat slice

best from my experiences is zachary's in berkeley/oakland, deep dish chicago style. costs as much as a steak house though

All of the Top 5, hell maybe the Top 250, are in NYC, NJ, and western CT. Anything else is pandering. If you've never had proper New York style pizza in those areas, arguing about whether pizza is better in Phoenix or Detroit is like arguing about whether Tim Tebow or Brock Osweiler is the best quarterback in NFL history.
