The Refuge.

NS1 will agree that it is the best pastrami in the world.

I thought about going there yesterday and trying the pastrami. But I didn't want to wait and my daughter was hungry so we ate In-N-Out instead. The Refuge looks like a great place to grab a beer.

Pizza around here is greasy, doughy and chewy. Some of the worst I ever had.

NYC generally for Neapolitan and NY style pie. Chicago for pan pizza (see below) and tavern style thin crust.


If one happens to be in Chicago I highly recommend stopping by Pequod's and trying their pan (not deep dish) pizza:

You can have Malnatiis delivered anywhere in the US. its like $100 for 6 pizzas, not a terrible price.

The best pizza I've had so far.... was in Florida. Haven't been to NYC or Chicago yet.

Two places come to mind:

Via Napoli (Italian restaurant) at Epcot/Walt Disney World-- their flour is imported from Naples and use water that's identical to water found in Naples.

My other fave is Cristino's Coal Oven Pizza in Clearwater, Florida.

I've never been to Refuge for their pastrami sandwich.. but their pastrami burger is pretty damn good.

To stay on topic, my favorite pizza in the area is Tony's.

The best Za I've ever had sits in a little corner place next to Southern Illinois University. Went there for a ball game, all the locals suggested 'Quatros' pizza. It's deep dish and it's insanely good.

Their pre-made pizzas are okay but not nearly as good as fresh-made. I guess it is better than nothing. Giordano's and Gino's are the other big deep dish places.

I had Gino's (isn't it Gino's East) in Chicago and just wasn't as impressed as I'd hoped. High hopes.

But I do like the local Chicago style a lot.

It is Gino's East. The one on Superior was awful the last time I went. A huge disappointment. I probably wont go back to that location but I don't know how many more are still open. Lou Malnatti's is consistent and I am a fan of a 12"x1/4" circle of sausage.
