Where to get articles for an ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA?

If I want to have to website with information about events, things and people, like a small encyclopedia, WHERE would I get the information for it? I don't need original content, and cheap or FREE would be ideal, but I also cannot legally copy from Britannica and others.

Ideas? For example, someone clicks on "bagel". I want to show a description, some history, etc about bagels. Any idea where to get, license or buy such content in bulk?

Thanks!

With Wikipedia, you have to provide links to the original content.. I would love to publish articles without providing links, to avoid "visitor leakage" and people hopping on to other sites... Does that make sense?

Don't post to wikipedia, copy it. You can fork the whole thing, and even use the software. GFDL entries may not be (legally)modifyable, but most are cc-by-sa

What is the value of information provided without oversight? If there are not any safeguards in place to prove the reliability of the articles and links to other reputable sources to confirm accuracy, what you're proposing will have all the academic merit of The Onion.

So you want to plagiarize someone else's content to profit off of it without giving credit to the original author. And we should help you why?

Then do your own research. If you're using someone else's information, you have to provide a source. I take it you never learned MLA/APA?

I'm still trying to figure out what you're after. How about providing some context? Is there a specific subject area that you're talking about?

Typically, you'd start your own wiki for some specific subject area and then you and/or your membership would fill it in and edit it and expand it. This would become a unique asset that you might monetize, and give you something to draw in visitors through search engines.

I am helping with the site http://OnThisDay.com, and we want to provide useful information for various events, people, and dates. Writing individual articles costs a lot of money, especially in this volume. I was hoping to buy in bulk, like a redistributable encyclopedia, and publish from it.

It would be a waste of human life to have to basically re-write history, as all this information is readily available elsewhere.

Thanks in advance!

You are trying to compete with well established, universally known sites. As you put it yourself:

It would be a waste of human life to have to basically re-write history

And most startups now try to compete with well established, universally known businesses, and so what

And most startups fail because they're essentially get-rich-quick schemes that involve copying someone else's idea and doing it worse.

So you want to create a website that shares useful information but you have no useful information to share? Maybe you shouldn't create such website. Just a thought.

He could give a better presentation than Wikipedia, and tie it in with topical merchandise; perhaps for birthday presents. In any case, using Wikipedia data, and crediting it in the about page isn't gonna drive many people to Wikipedia. It's not like there's many humans that don't know of its existence.

Anyone else find this thread kind of out of character? SoftwareEng been drinking? Did little brother snag his account?

:hmm:

It's like trying to enter the market as an immediate and direct competitor to Walmart, but with a smaller selection and higher prices.
There needs to be a differentiator.

And that page even links to some other "on this day" sites: BBC, New York Times, and Bell Internet in Canada.

You are not a start up. You are a fucking thief. And a LAZY god damn thief on top of that.

Dear shortylickens, perhaps you failed to read my original post. I was asking where I could buy in bulk, or download (LEGALLY), information for an online database/encyclopedia. Perhaps before insulting people, you would be wise enough to understand their simple goal? Whether that goal is rational or profitable is not being asked here. Ah, thank you.
