I'm currently working for a project with a GUI that's dated back to the mid 90's. I think we're finally going to get a chance to totally re do the GUI. Most of the users think it's dated, unintuitive and unresponsive. it's basically a system monitoring utility that polls network equipment and other systems components for health status, performs logical troubleshooting and reports the results back to the operator.
What are good programs/ tools out there to help create a mock up GUI for storyboarding ideas? I heard good things about balsamiq. I've been a requirements engineer for the last 5 years in my department, but nothing GUI related, just business logic. i've always things in the back of my head that were nice to haves for our current GUI, but wouldn't know where to start with a complete redesign. Is there good resources to read up on good GUI design? Likely the new design we create will stick around for the next 10-20 years just like the old one, so I would like to make it as nice as we can.
