Thinking about taking the family there for the holiday. First timer. I'm trying to decide where to stay. I'm thinking about Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach or the Moon Palace. Not really interested in nightlife or clubbing since our 8yr old will be with us. I just need beautiful beach/pool, good restaurants, and nice room. I've read some reviews on TripAdvisor but it never hurts to get more opinion. Any other hotels or areas I should consider?

Why Mexico? I wouldn't go to any part of mexico for any amount of money: much less pay to go.

The US has great beaches.

cancun is a trashy place built for rich teenagers.

Look elsewhere for family fun.

I shot a wedding there

Never been but from what I understand it's what everyone above is saying. If you want something fake as can be and overrun with the worst types of tourists then maybe. Otherwise I'd look for some small non tourist beach town/village. Or maybe somewhere else in central america all together.

Because I'm looking for somewhere close and warm with crystal clear beach and something that's affordable. I looked all at the Caribbean and Mexico and the only places that met that criteria for my travel period were Cancun or Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Everywhere else, it's either sold out, too far, or too expensive. I don't have much flexibility on the travel dates so my options are somewhat limited given my budget.

I know US has great beaches. I've been to many of them. But only places you can swim in Nov/Dec are Hawaii and south Florida like Miami. Hawaii is too far and expensive for what you get and I've done that. Miami, I already booked getaway for next week.

I was looking for opinion on the hotels with great beaches at Cancun. I'm looking for Corona beer commercial like beach. I want my Corona moment.

After more reading, I've crossed off the Moon Palace and replaced it with Ritz Carlton. So which has better beach area? Fiesta Americana or Ritz?

I much prefer Playa Del Carmen to Cancun.

Fewer kids, better beach, and a nice town to visit with tons of shops/food.

I thought Cancun was where all the teens go to drink and party? Not sure I'd want to take my family there regardless of whether it is safe from all the drug violence that plagues the rest of Mexico.

Hi,

We recently stayed in Playa Del Carmen for a week in August 2011, its about 40 min south from Cancun. The beaches were pretty great there, although I know the beaches at Cancun are better developed (and more crowded). Also, the shopping areas in Cancun are much larger along the lines of huge malls.

Nevermind what the naysayers are saying about Mexico. In these regions of Yucatan and Quintana Roo, it is extremely safe. In addition, no other place compares from a price point. My wife and I each got RT tickets from Baltimore for 300 dollars. We stayed at a resort called the Royal Haciendas. We used taxis to volley between hotel and downtown PDC (12 U.S.), the ADO bus to Tulum downtown and ruins (5 U.S.), a rental car for a day in Cozumel (35 U.S.), a rental car for a day trip to Chichen Itza (50 U.S.),and an ADO to Cancun (5 U.S.)
The best snorkeling in the area is in Puerto Murelos between PDC and Cancun. There is a protected reef there that is amazing to see. Book through your hotel, should not be more than 40 U.S. per person, all equipment provided (we took our own gear). For scuba, cozumel is the best.

Have a great time, don't be afraid to explore. Its safe, cheap, friendly and every business is ready to take your price.

Could try Isla Mujeres. Wife and I stayed at the Avalon Reef Club. Small beaches, but the views are quite nice (place is surrounded on 3 sides by water) and it has some nice tide pools and reefs in large shallow areas which would be fun and safe for the kids. It's the slow season anyway, so it's not like you'd have to fight for space. Never tried the pool 'cause I didn't see the point.

Restaurant wasn't the best I've ever had, but it wasn't terrible either. Lots of great food in town anyway. It's worth it to upgrade to a suite/villa instead of staying in the "tower".

Of the ones you listed The Dominican Republic sounds the most interesting to me.

Good place to stay is under the bridge, specifically by hanging from your neck. At least, that's the impression I get looking at how a lot of people end up down there. If that doesn't work you can go to a bar and maybe finish your night being mangled by Zeta. Fun times in Mexico, no doubt.

DR is possibly even worse. I've come to the experienced conclusion that I hate touring third world countries. You're either unsafe or at the least getting continually hassled by locals who see you as nothing but a rich mark. DR is better than Jamaica though, definitely. There's a reason so many people stay on resorts behind guarded gates in these places.

Having lived in China and Malaysia in the 80s I have to say that I actually love travelling abroad. Granted Asia is a very different experience than central america and the problems there just as different. But there are many unpleasant aspects to travelling in Asia as well. Still LOVE it.

I stayed at Moon Palace in 2005 or 2006 shortly after they reopened from the hurricane. It was alright. I like Sandals a lot better. Some of the Moon Palace staff was rude and I really got the feeling some of them don't like their jobs. My friend bought a timeshare (or bulk vacation trips) from them so he had the wedding there. Oh and I think solid stone would have been softer than the bed. I'm probably being harsh, there was a lot of stuff we liked (the brazillian and italian restaurants out by the golf course rocked) but it had it's ups and downs.

I know people who love Cancun. I was fairly unimpressed. There are a lot of bars and such with frat boys, but I was there in June so you probably won't experience much of that if you go while school is not out. If you plan on staying at the hotel the entire time you better find a pretty nice hotel with a lot to do.

Stay away from the all inclusive places. It was nothing but drunks in their 40's and 50's hanging out around the pool all day drinking. The food was mediocre at best. The staff are somewhat friendly, but obviously put off by the constant bombardment from the drunks.

Outside the hotels there's nothing redeeming about Cancun at all. It's a 100% tourist trap.

It sounds like it's all going to come down to the hotel you choose, so make sure it's someplace that you and the kids won't get bored of in a few days as there's not much to do outside of the hotel for a family.

How is one hating? Cancun is a shitty place for people with family. We not jealous that he has money to go on vacation. We're suggesting ones money is better spent else where.

The nearest airport hotel, so it's easy to catch the next available flight right the hell out.
