Boston airport apologizes for fire drill on 9/11

Officials at Boston's Logan International Airport are apologizing for holding a fire drill, complete with smoke and flames, on the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The two hijacked jets that were flown into the World Trade Center towers flew out of Logan.

The runway fire drill, announced on the airport's Facebook page, drew harsh condemnation on social media sites.

The Massachusetts Port Authority, the agency that runs the airport, said in a statement that it "apologizes for conducting the fire training exercise and understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11."

Several events were held at the airport to mark the anniversary.

"How clueless and insensitive can you be," one woman wrote on the airport's Facebook page.
People are butt hurt over that?

I was waiting to catch a ferry to the statue of liberty. Back then the first boat over got to go to the top of the statue (after 9/11 nobody is allowed to go to the top I believe).

My wife and I had tickets to go to the top of the world trade center later that day. Fortunately for us, we read about the statue of liberty thing in a travel guide and decided to do that before WTC that day, otherwise it's likely I wouldn't be writing this message right now.

We didn't see the first plane as it came from the other direction, but the second plane flew directly over our head. I'll never forget how loud that was and the horrendous noise it made when it hit the building. The worst thing ever about that day was seeing people jumping from the tops of the towers in the viewfinder of my camcorder. Those images cannot be erased from your head.

In computer class in high school. They turned on the TV's in the adjacent library and we sat and watched. I don't think I will ever feel the same way I did that day watching it all happen.

Complete and utter disbelief pretty much sums it up.

At home when I saw the news that the towers were hit.
At work when the towers came down.
Everyone was glued to the little CRT TV in the work gym or any TV we could find. I don't think anyone did any actual work that whole day.

Was sleeping in a chair in front of my pc while the game Unreal was stilling running. A phone call from my dad woke me up and he told me about the attacks.

Anyone try to recreate what they were doing when they first heard about 9/11? Today early in the morning around 3am I reinstalled Unreal, played it, went to sleep without setting the alarm for old times. Got no call from my dad though. Wound up sleeping in until 10am today. I don't have a job and didn't have one back then either. That made it more authentic for the recreation.

So I called up my dad after my late sleep in. We always talk to each other by phone every morning. He's upstairs but it saves having to walk up there. Just kidding about the upstairs. He lives 10 miles away.

I was at work, trying to view the news sites. It seemed like all of them were down.

I was still getting the AP news alerts on my 2 way pager, but I found it hard to believe what I was reading without seeing it.

BBC news was still up. That's what I used.

^^^^ Crazy story...

I was in 8th grade. I remember the principal made a school wide announcement saying we all needed to go to the audotoreum right away. I thought we were all in trouble. He tells us planes crashed into the world trade center and that we were all going home early. It wasn't until I got home and saw how bad that it was that I realized what was going on. I think for a 13yo kid, I couldn't quite grasp it until I saw the news and the videos of people falling 100 stories that it really sunk in.

Was at home as a 14 year old playing Duke Nukem 3D on my N64,when the planes hit my folks switched the N64 off as they got a call about what just happened at NYC and we were all blown away with Fox News replaying the planes hitting the builds over and over again.

Wow that's today. Crazy it's already been 12 years.

I was in high school, grade 10. Someone in class mentioned something about a plane crashing into a building, not really sure where he even got that info, since we were in class and it happened around what, 8-9ish? I did not think much of it, nobody really did, and even he did not. He did say it was the World Trade Center but nobody really knew what that was then. Pictured a typical 20 story building, and the plane being maybe a Cesna or something. Maybe a few people hurt.

Throughout the day we kept overhearing a bit more details especially after lunch because people who go home to eat would have seen the news. That's when we started to realize this was bigger. They did not really want us to talk about it though but we were all eager to get home and put on the news.

Got home, I did not even have to change the channel because every single channel had it on. I could not believe just how big this was. Seeing the first plane, and second plane, the collapse. Then realized the Pentagon got hit too, did not know what this was either till I saw the news, and realized it was a whole other building. Then there was the crash in Pennsylvania that was supposedly shot down but I don't think that ever got confirmed. There was also a missing plane at one point, but don't recall what happened, maybe it was that one. It was just so much stuff going on at once. The whole thing was just so crazy and surreal to watch.

I remember putting it on CNN almost every day after school for a good couple weeks just to see what else they found, why it happened, then the war in Afghanistan etc...

Finally home after working all night, with the tv on while I cruised the internet. I stayed glued to the tv until about 2pm, then crawled into bed.

In an airplane hurtling toward a building.

Seriously though, do we have to do this thread every year? I was getting ready for work, watching it on CNN. Went to work and watched it all day. No work was done on that day.

if threads like this bother you, i feel bad for you.

was in 11th grade. no one really knew what happened until my English teacher started yelling and crying screaming at us how bad everything was. we didn't have many tv's on campus at the time but once i saw video it was surreal.

I was in college. Woke up, checked email. A professor said, roughly, "Naturally, class is canceled today. If you don't know what's going on, turn on the TV." That's how I found out what was going on.

I had two classes that day. Later, the other professor said, roughly, "Naturally, class is not canceled today."

I was still in high school at the time. Just started Grade 11. I had first period off that semester. Was at home eating breakfast when I saw the news break on TV. Went to my class, came home for lunch and learned the towers had collapsed.

I live on a flight path. Was so weird in the days following not seeing any planes in the sky.
