wow thanks

interdasting, the 9/11 thread is exactly as long as this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2193087

i think this goes to show the true magnitude of AISTBATSMF

There were a bunch of threads that were made.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=611460&highlight=world+trade+center+2001

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=611578

Search for threads back in that time frame, the entire focus of every thread was 9/11.

I was in AP Physics class in high school - my teacher immediately said "I bet it was Bin Laden", and I was quite impressed after the fact because I had no clue who that was. We put on the news - I actually saw the second one happen live.

What phone did you have in 2001? I don't remember texting even until 2004/2005.

I had texting on my Nokia 8290 at the time - and it was free.

Health class, sophomore year at Brooklyn Tech. Its one of the tallest buildings in Brooklyn (or was at the time) and we had a clear view of the towers. One kid pointed out the smoking first tower, and then a few minutes later the principal told us that a plane hit the tower. We thought it was an accident, but later on in between classes we heard that the second tower was hit.

There were a lot of rumors and speculation throughout the day, and later on in technology class we watched the television coverage.

Later that day I found out that a few of my fellow students had family in the towers. There were a few crying when they were notified.

We ended up sharing our school for a while with the students from Stuyvesant, which is another specialized science school (also a rival). Since we had 4,000 students already, and they close to 2,500, we ended up having an abbreviated schedule for a while so they could have classes in the afternoon, but sometimes there were nearly 6,000 people in the building. I forget how long we did that for, but eventually the Stuyvesant building was cleared for them to return.

Damn. Us Stuy high guys hated you guys.

Damn. Us Stuy high guys hated you guys.

Don't worry, we hated you too

Especially after some Stuy kids etched up our desks saying our school sucks. Dammit, we're the only ones allowed to say that!

I wonder if there are any Bronx Sci member on the board... I had quite a few friends there.

On my way to breakfast before class. The TV was on in the sitting room outside the dorm cafeteria. I remember still going to Physics class and then having class cancelled 5 minutes in. There were people talking about not wanting to go back to their dorms because they were in the towers (As if someone was all that interested in hitting a college dorm tower in Michigan...)

I was just getting to school, 7th grade. I didn't understand when my friend first told me. Then slowly realized in homeroom as we listened to the radio, and proceeded to do so in the rest of my classes for the day. Might have been 8th grade.. not sure

Ya my brother called me from a Mexican airport to ask why all flghts to the US were grounded, after I told him the WTC was leveled, he said, "I bet it was fuckin Osama Bin Laden". At the time I was like "Who?"

While I remeber the 93 and 98 bombings, I don't recall the media putting a face behind it like they did after 9/11

I was driving down US 23 on my way to work. Would have heard it on one of the radio morning shows but I was listening to my MP3 CD player, which was a pretty effing amazing thing to have in your car in 2001. Got to and my boss was like "did you hear a plane crashed into a building? some sort of navigational error". Then the 2nd one hit and everyone watched it in the break room for the rest of the day.

Just getting up to get ready for work. My mother called me [from Kansas] to tell me to turn on the TV. My heart dropped and I knew the world would forever change going forward.

My son [who was 9 years old at the time] couldn't understand or fathom the significance of the attacks and I still don't think he does to this day.

9th grade, World Civilizations class (combined History & English).

Everyone just huddled on the floor around the TV. We watched the second plane hit and the towers collapse in real-time. There was a lot of crying... I live in Northern Virginia and a lot of classmates had parents working in the Pentagon that they couldn't reach.

I was in high school, grade 10. Someone mentioned that a plane crashed in the WTC. I had never heard of that building, so in my mind I was thinking a smaller average building, and a small twin engine plane, and maybe a few people dead but nothing all that major. The school did not want to inform us what was fully going on as it would disturb the class. Throughout the day people talked about it here and there, but this was before everyone had smartphones and stuff so information was not as easy to get. (I feel old) So finally after school I go home and turn on the TV and was shocked at how massive this really was. I still think they could have at least cancelled classes and setup a TV in the gym or something. This was a piece of world history happening, more or less.

Was sleeping in my car and woke up to my old fashioned alarm clock. Put on Howard Stern and heard him talking about some attacks. Really didn't understand what was going on at the time until I got to work and put on the TV to see what was going on.

Continued on with work thereafter.

just got into work at one of the tall building in downtown Dallas (Renaissance Tower - the one with the large X's on the sides of the building at night and has the spires on top)....We found a small TV to watch the news for about an hour before they evacuated the building (probably around 9ish AM Central time). The streets in downtown were packed with others who were forced to leave their buildings as well...will definitely never forget that day...

I was skipping my Linear Algebra class, as I usually did on Tuesdays since it was my only class. I was sleeping when I got a call from my mom's boyfriend who was trying to reach her (she didn't have a cell phone at the time) and said he couldn't get a hold of her at her work. She worked at the IRS building in town.

I was still half asleep as he was telling me the WTC towers were attacked, the Pentagon and State Dept (as was the early reports) were bombed and he just wanted to make sure things were ok with her. I just responded "well that doesn't happen everyday".

I kinda came to a few minutes later and started watching the news while updating the thread here. I was a lurker at the time but still read the forums. The rest of the day I just sat at home watching tv, reading bbc news as it was one of the few sites that would load reliably, and reading anandtech.

In class Freshman year at UGA. First rumors about a plane crash started in my first class. Didn't actually find out what was happening until the next class at which point school was dismissed. I remember going back to the dorms and almost every room I passed had the door open with the TV going. Those who didn't have TVs were sitting in with others who did.

I was working at the Naval Research Lab that day, which is only a few miles from the Pentagon as the crow flies. My colleagues and I were in a front office watching the reports re: the world trade center when we heard the plane hit the Pentagon. That plane basically flew right into the offices where my uncle Bob worked. Thankfully he was out of the Office on travel. But most of his staff were killed that day.

Scariest day of my life, bar none. Watched the black smoke billowing into the sky from the Pentagon while I sat for 5 hours on the BW parkway trying to get home. Took my wife 12 hours to get out of DC using the metro. If there was a nuke attack (or any other major direct attack on the city, for that matter), we would have been F'ed.

I was I highschool. Was in grade 11. That semester, my spare period was the first one, so I was eating breakfast when the planes hit the towers. Saw it happen almost live on TV. I went to my first class of day, then came home for lunch. By then the towers had collapsed. It's one of those weird events where I remember exactly what I was doing when I first heard the news.

I remember the heroics following the attacks and how it briefly brought the American people together. The fallout, two failed wars, increased surveillance of civilians, abusive airport security, I think we came out worse than we went in... In the long run.
