Yea.. I understand that you don't have the AT&T contract with the iPhone EDGE, but I really don't want to pay more then $300 for an older model and they are in general, $400-500 still for the older EDGE model. Which I'm sure is because of the lackluster reviews of the newer 3G battery life, etc...
There are three primary reasons the old iPhone is still selling for so much (IMO);
1. The new 3G iPhone has yet to be fully unlocked while the old one can easily be unlocked. Right now the 3G iPhone can be used with a sim-unlock adapter, but its not a true unlock until the baseband can be modified.
2. The new iPhone requires you to sign a contract and activate before you leave the store. That makes the old iPhones valuable since the new phone is hard to find outside of AT&T and Apple.
3. I don't think its lackluster reviews that are keeping the price high, but many who said its not a monumental upgrade thats keeping people hanging onto their first gen iPhone, rather than upgrading, keeping the available supply small.
I think its gonna be awhile before you see First Gen iPhone's regularly under $300. I've seen a few here and there, but the bulk (as you noted) are still $400+.
