That depends on what your server has on it.
If it has music on it, like mine does, the best place is AudioGalaxy. What you do is search for a song, any song, using the FTP method, then look at the top of the search results page and you will see an "Add" link.... click that and follow instructions.

Also, post your IP/port here so that we could visit.

ROFL, 192.168.0.1 is your internal LAN IP -- you need to give us your external interface's IP address.

Blah. Why do so many people make this mistake...

Several things:
1) Version 2.5g of Serv-U is not the latest (which is 2.5k of the 2.x series), and I think has some bugs in it.
2) Your copy of Serv-U is illegal.
3) Check out my [quota-free] server if you wish: gigacluster.net:21.

Oops, I forgot to start up my FTP server after restarting the computer. I know I can run it as a service, but I like to have control over these things.
It's up now.
Regarding the url: this is the normal "formation" of an FTP url:
ftp://usernameassword@ip-address.com/

If it doesn't work for you, here's the manual information:
IP: gigacluster.net
Port: 21
User: music
Pass: gigabytes

My FTP server's speed is intentionally limited to 1 Kbps per user, to prevent them from downloading all my files in one night. This way when someone wants a song badly, they can easily download it without any of this quota crap, but at the same time they cannot abuse this priviledge.

you're forgetting to put the port at the end. it's interpreting anything after the first colon as the port, fvcking it up.

that and your username/password doesn't work, and it won't let me log on anymore.

Pepsi, the very first URL GigaCluster posted (ftp://music:gigabytes@gigacluster.net/) really is absolutely valid.
Port 21 is the default for FTP (and thus can be omitted), and the login works fine, for me. If your FTP program says otherwise, it's crappy. FlashFXP seems to do the job.
A 1kps limitiation is ridiculous, though. I don't need FTPs to download a single song, and you can't really download an album at 1 kb per second.

Sd's server works fine, too. linkified
Doesn't like passive mode, though. Oh and that disclaimer made me laught. Nice try, it's still illegal though, I'm afraid.
That reminds me - is it appreciated to talk about this here?

Moonbender, it's possible to avoid all hassles by just specifying the port.

(i'd love to see him try to survive in unix without being specific...)

Pepsi, I'm sorry for being stubborn on the issue, but no, it is not necessary to add the port (as long as it is 21). Port 21 is the standard for FTP (standard as in normed standard, I'd say), much as 80 is the default port for HTTP. You don't add :80 to every web URL you stumble upon, do you?
Any decent FTP program should be able to parse an URL that includes the standard way of adding authentification, but not a port. The @ delimits the username/password string from the actual address, and may (obviously) not be interchanged with the address itself. Any other behaviour is a bug in the program.
I'm pretty positive he'd survive in the UNIX community as long as omitting omittable strings is all he does.

BTW, this behaviour is defined in RFC1738 ("Uniform Resource Locators (URL)"), section 3.

FelixDeKat, look on Tucows for FTP servers. Serv-U is definitively recommended.

And as to surviving in unix... try ftp ftp.mcafee.com it *knows* to use port 21. No need to specify unless you are not hard core and like to type too much

1) I have my own FreeBSD UNIX server, and I survive pretty well, Pepsi. (GigaCluster)

2) The 1 kbps restriction is only until I get my DSL back (should be this Tuesday) -- then it will be increased. I love myself too much to suffer because someone is hogging my entire dial-up connection.

3) Deerfield.com no longer makes Serv-U, and the new version of Serv-U (now developed by RhinoSoft) has limits unless you pay at least $250.
