good website? anyone?

I have seen some people describing how you can close some bridges that'll reset the default multiplier and default voltage

I wanna know what's up, help me put my ass in the know.

connecting all the 'L1' bridges unlocks the multiplyer - so on motherboards that allow it you can adjust it (to overclock, etc)

connecting all the 'L7' bridges sets the default voltage of the chip (what the motherboard reads, and sets on bootup) @ 1.85v
this helps when overclocking with high bus speeds and stuff

OMFG, the descriptions on that page were so far over my head....

I'm a simple soldier, "KISS", Keep It Simple (for the) Stupid.

1) Close the L1 bridges, and you can adjust the multipliers
2) Close the L7 bridges, and your voltage is @ 1.85v

that I understand.

I notice there is a way to adjust the default multiplier somehow. Yes, I read the page, but that was far too technical for my stupid-ness.

thx tho, I'm gonna re-read it after I take some ginko biloba or something...mebbe after a full night's sleep....

thx!

Busta, why the wink?

is there incorrect info in that article?

I liked it, assuming it's correct. A good example of pandering to the dolts of this world (like me!)

Just so I'm clear:

1. The default core voltage is 1.7v.
2. If I unlock the L7 bridges, the core goes to 1.85v.
3. I can then set the core voltage lower in the BIOS.
4. Then at startup, the core boots at 1.85v to post, then the BIOS brings it down to whatever I have it set at so I'm not running it hot.

It's 4 I'm not sure about. Any clarification is appreciated.

Henry, I check the site every day!

I've even read the Athlon overclocking guide a dozen times. While it's a very in-depth article, what's there goes over my head, and other details are just missing. It mentions, "however we simply chose to connect the ?Golden Bridges? using a conductive pen at L7 on our CPUs to increase the core voltage to improve stability when overclocking." But it doesn't say that you can then set it to whatever you want in the BIOS. Maybe it was assumed, but I sure didn't pick up on it.

I knew there was another good article. But again, it doesn't say that connecting the L7 bridges unlocks the voltage, just sets it to 1.85v.

Anyway, it's why I love these forums. Come in. Ask a point-blank question. Get a bunch of straight answers. Love the site AND the forums!

Not sure if it's illegal to mention, but Tom's Hardware has a good article too, if you search for it. Showed exactly what each set of bridges did and their settings.

kgraeme - we know what's missing, so.... argh, i didn't say anything Just keep checking the site, and make sure you guys tell us what you wanna know. this is a very good way for us to know what to have on our site.

and don't worry about linking to Tom's Hardware, it's welcome here. And to make it fair, we also think that article by Tom is a very informative one

A good straight forward Tbird/Duron heatsink installation guide, Henry. You can't believe the number of PM's I get from either newbies, or guys who just broke a core and don't want to do it again.
It'a phenomenon...I have not broken 1, but yet the problem is rampant. :Q

Anyway, we need a good guide here with pics, so I can start linking people to that.

RoboTECH: no sarcasm intended on the wink, buddy! Tom's article on the subject is clear and easy to follow, with lots of diagrams; it's what helped me to understand the bridges(and their manipulation) better than any other article(s) I've read to date. Not only do I have my L1 bridges crossed to unlock the multiplier on my AMD cpu's(duh!), but I've crossed the L6 bridges on my 1GHz birdie so that the default multiplier is 7. On my Duron, I've raised the default voltage on the L7 bridges to 1.75V to squeeze more juice out of it(650@975). Any questions?

Good luck, buddy! Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. . .

RoboTECH, you wrote.....

1) Close the L1 bridges, and you can adjust the multipliers

Close the L7 bridges, and your voltage is @ 1.85v that I understand.

I notice there is a way to adjust the default multiplier somehow. Yes, I read the page, but that was far too technical.....End quote.....

Not really...read it again. Article covers "all" degrees of oc'g mods,
from simple "close the L1 bridges then use mobo devices to oc"...to various "hard mods" for mobos with no oc'g support. See the oc'g summary at the bottom of page 1.

So readers can be "selective" and focus on what they "need to know".

Article was written to promote "understanding" of what's going on, so when a "hard mod" is the only option, it's perfectly clear how it's going to work. That leads to fewer mistakes than following a cookbook style "do this/do that" format. We don't believe anyone should go into "hard mods" unless they know/understand what's going on. When you're "changing" the FSB Multiplier or Vcore you should be sure that the "hard mods" are correct. That's where "understanding comes in.

We think it's best to know "why" closing all the L7 bridges sets Vcore = 1.85V...then you know how to reset to all the other options as well.

Give it another whirl...they're only simple DC HI/LO binary logic circuits, (if you need them).

johncar, I can recognize that your article is highly informative

I'm dumb as a stump. that's the problem. It goes over my head.

I think I'm slowly getting it

however, to answer Steve's idea of a heatsink installation guide, HOW THE HELL ARE PEOPLE BUSTING THEIR CORES???

WTF? I've installed several FOP32's, FOP38's and Tornado2's (much better clip, IMHO)

what is so tough about it???

As far as the bridge thing, I need it straight and stupid. The L7 and L1 stuff is pretty easy, but it's the other bridges that give me a headache

however, Tom's page had a perfect example of what I needed, that big ole grpah/picture thing that showed the bridges and exactly what they look like at each CPU speed/multiplier
