What's more likely:
A: Bank failed to account for a deposit.
B: Wife cashed check.
Option A will not work. The teller/ATM will not balance out and someone stays at it until error is found and corrected.

haha!
update 3/9 6pm
Still no response from citi about their investigation. I guess its a little harder then they thought
He could just be stupid, too.I honestly don't think he has the money. Because he is going down the path of bank and mail fraud. You would think that once he knows the jig is up he'd just say oops it's in my account now, sorry. However he is continuing down this path which makes me think he really doesnt have the money.
He may be a dbag but I don't think he's a scammer. He is one of those wall street investment bankers though so who knows.
...
Interesting thread here, GL OP!
you fly your ignorance flag high and proud don't you.
Are you have these conversations with him via phone or email? If over the phone, I hope you're recording them.
Hope everything works out for you.

Well you're showing your ignorance about other countrys.
This isnt America. We stopped using cheques 20 years ago. Nobody I work with has a cheque book.
Neither does my mother or father. My sister is married with kids any they don't have a cheque book.
Nobody uses cheques! They're archaic. Just look at the issue the OP is happening.
I deposit my rent into my straight into land lords bank account. This problem with missing rent would never, ever happen.
Isn't it illegal to record someone in a private setting without their knowledge or something?

OP, are you the only one renting from the LL? If not I'd check with other tenants and see if they hare having the same problems.
Was the conversation in email? If so that's awesome because you have them on intentionally defrauding you and no judge is going to hold you to a lease when the land-lord is admits to trying to steal from you.
Update 3/10
Got this message from citi this morning
The only issue with that is it never states who received the money (just the bank the did)....just playing the worst that could go wrong card...but, yeah, sucks that the land lord may be trying to pull a fast one.
I replied to the email asking if I could get some more information like what branch was it deposited at, what account number was it deposited into, etc.
This letter, along with the check image are just to prove that we paid the rent. If I can obtain any more information it'll help prove if the LL actually has the money or not. If he does indeed have the money then he knowingly tried to defraud me and there are going to be serious consequences.
