Thanks for the link, reading it right now. One thing Ill make a note on is the production numbers per this document dont seem to jive with your 15 fold comment. Unless Afghanistan is pushing out nearly 75000 metric tons a year now?

If anything I understated it. In 2001, under the Taliban, they produced 185 metric tons, then in 2002 it went up to 3,422. I believe it's currently around 4,000/year.

Well 2001 is a blip on the graph. Obviously the invasion of Afghanistan affected production. In 1999 right in the heart of the taliban years they produced nearly 4600 metric tons of the stuff. And the graph is on a steady climb from 1980 when they produced 200 tons.

Interesting read however and will continue to read it through the day when I have a chance. Thanks for the link

It's a blip in that it was only for one year, but the Taliban had worked closely with the UN to reduce opium production, which certainly indicates it's possible to reduce production and exporting through tighter governmental control.

Possibly but the production up until 2001 was higher than when the Taliban took control. They saw a 46% net increase in production under the Taliban from 96-2000.

Hey, over here.
Let's not lose sight of the question.
Where's Osama?
Are we even looking for him?

Its safe to assume they are not looking for Osama. The war on Terror is big business. Don't bite the hand that feeds the nation right now.

Honestly, what else can they export from Afghanistan?
Natural Gas
Oil
Poppies

Do they even have enough resources to create an economy bigger than hunter gatherer types

Why do you even post? All you do is whine and complain, either add something to the discusstion or keep your defeatist, whiney, pathetic comments to yourself. Yes, I have read plenty of your posts..

Sorry to de-rail.

"I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him...I truly am not that concerned about him."[President Bush, Press Conference, 3/13/02]

Thanks for playing guys.

Oh, no you're just whining and not providing solutions as usual.

In turn, just out of curiosity, do you share President Bush's opinion that it doesn't matter whether we capture or kill bin Laden?

I for one was startled by that statement, and I can't help but think his sentiment informs the relative lack of urgency we've placed on this strategic goal.

Yes, and no...

The killing (or *especially* capture) of Bin Laden would be a tremendous psychological victory (I'd raise a beer or 2 to it). But it doesn't sound like he's anything more than a figurehead anymore.

I think the left is suggesting we invade Pakistan. Warmongers.
Would have made more sense than Iraq. Pakistan was actually harboring terrorists and *gasp* they have WMDs!

I'm merely pointing out that if this administration wanted to invade someone, there were other options more fitting than was Iraq. (The best option being to finish the job in Afghanistan.)

Oh wait....the other countries didn't have oil. Well, except for Iran. But Iran wasn't the low-hanging fruit, was it?

I didn't think you'd answer with a solution.

If Kerry was pres, I'm sure you'd be pressing him to invade Pakistan right?

And yes, I agree Iraq was the "low hanging fruit" principle.
