Whew, the 3.0Ghz runs hot

My 3.0GHz is hitting 75c on a full load, and the stock fan that came with it is pathetic, only doing around 1600 RPM. Any ideas on a good fan for the 3.0Ghz chip?

There are couple good choices for the p4 at the moment. The zalman flower heatsinks are good. Ax-478, Alpha 8942. either of those with fan that blows at least 35cfm should be good. What motherboard do you have. I am asking becuase many report higher than actual temps.

If you've got the cash, pick up the Swiftech MCX4000 and an Enermax 80mm adjustable fan so you can find the best performance/noise level you can live with. The Alpha 8942 is also very good and can be found for about $15 - $20 cheaper. Here is a review comparing the two. Since you're running so hot, the MCX4000 is probably your best bet.

The fan should not run at 1600rpm by all means.
If your motherboard comes with auto fan rpm adjustment AND your cpu fan also has auto speed control, you will experience
LOW rpm like 1600rpm.

You will need to disable the auto rpm control in motherboard bio in order to have proper cpu fan speed.

Doobieonline pretty much has it spot on. I just installed my Switfy and it is sooo much better than stock HSF combos. It may be a PITA to install and remove the Intel retainer off your motherboard, but after said and done, it is well worth it. Using a Sunon 35 cfm fan, my temps are - 28C idle, and 39C full load for 24+hours running Prime95. And this combo is not much louder than the stock equipment. I am also using Arctic Silver 2 thermal paste, which is way better IMO than that black gooey stuff on stock heatsinks. Good luck.

P4 1.8 @ 2.4 @ 1.5 volts, and 100% stable. I'd try and run it higher, but I can't lock my agp/pci, and do not want to run them out of spec.

I'd start with nerdwannabe's suggestion. The 3.06's supposedly have the avc sunflower as the retail cooler, so they should be pretty good. 1600 rpm's is definitely out of line, should be about 5K....

AMD is no longer the computer/space heater leader, that distinction now belongs to Intel.....
