Though this may not sound like an emergency - it really is.

I work in a design studio

My area of work is mostly 3d (maya) animation and some compositing.

I've been told by the powers that boss to choose a new 22 inch CRT by the end of next week. Using web resources here are my options (so far):

1. IBM C220P (good reviews - would love to hear from anyone)
2. Mitsubishi 2070sb (some reviewrs say bad on text - true?)
3. Samsung 1200NF (Supposedly good - anyone?)
4. 19 inch Lacie blue 4 (only 19 inch available to me)
5. Any other you can recommend

Really would love to hear anything from anyone

Thanks!

Ok... I have an IBM P72 17" from 1997 and a refurbish NEC/Mitsu 930sb Diamondtron (non-spectraview model).

I know these aren't the 22" like you are asking about but the quality of both of these monitors is great. The IBM was just spectacular and still works as good as day one. I've only had the Mitsu 930sb for about 2 weeks but it is great.

About the text, I think the IBM looks better (slightly) on text but the 930sb isn't far off. They both look great in games and graphics. I've also notice a little more flickering on the Mitsu when on a really still screen. This could have nothing to do with the monitor, I guess though.

There are a few people here who own the 2070sb, deadseasquirrel is one of the owners. BTW- the superbright mode is AWESOME!

Thanks. I certainly will let you know what happens. I am trying my best to gather info right now (any more input would be very welcome).

(On a sidenote - I have had experience with the Mitsu 930sb as it was popped on my desk a while back. I rejected it for being rather blurry on text (color and contrast were very good though) and rather blurry in general. I have since learned though, that it has a couple of holes on the left side which contain focus controls. One thing I can say for certain is that this monitor was extremely sensitive to any devices in it's surrounding area (i.e. cordless (anything), speakers, and, other monitors) so you might be able to get rid of that flicker you mention by distancing such devices from it. Anyways I suppose (perhaps wrongly so)that the 2070sb is a totally different story.)

My superiors prefer I opt for the IBM as we have some kind of special price on them - so any info on it would be excellent (all i have is a number of net reviews and i don't know if i should trust those) - however I do have the leverage to demand something else if I think it appropriate.

I agree the 930sb is more blurry on text. I need to hook the IBM up next to it and compare again. The 930sb looks outstanding on games though, incredible. As for the 930 flickering, it is real bad. you REALLY have to look notice it. I am going to try isolating it on a power circuit, moving some stuff around, and maybe trying another PSU or cables.

I'll take a look for the focus controls, sounds like something I might not want to mess with though. Honestly though it isn't THAT bad. Like I said maybe slightly more blurry on text. Games it is very sharp looking, color and contrast outstanding. Love the superbright modes!

I'm on my GF's laptop right now, the text on this thing is REALLY clear. hehe. Still prefer CRT for everything though

if you are in the market for 21" CRTs, then look at the Sony Trinitron. I have one and it is excellent.

If you cant find the actual sony monitor, then look for CRTs made by other manufacturers that have the Sony Trinitron tube in it. Mine is a HP p1130 21" CRT and i absolutely love it. I think that Dell has the same model with the sony tube in ti also....so look around

from what i have heard, CRTs with Sony Trinitrons and Mitsubishi DiamondTron tubes are the best in terms of quality.

Mitsubishi 2070SB is an excellent monitor. It does have some geometry problems, but in my case I was able to fix it easily. It's not bothering me at all.

I have noticed one thing though, and that's the dancing pixels/monitor jitter. It doesn't occur very often, seems to happen with text only. I think it's because of the cable mess behind my computer. The power cord also goes along with them. Definitely not good, especially since the monitor cable is about 2 metres long => sensitive to EMI. I'll try to purchase a shorter and better shielded VGA cable soon. I'm going to clean up the mess as well. Hopefully that helps.

But seriously, other than that, there are totally no malfunctions on this monitor. I absolutely love it!

I use to own a Mitsubishi 2070SB 22" and it wasn't the greatest thing...like others have said, the screen would jitter sometimes and it also suffered from slight geometry issues.

Personally, I would opt for a ViewSonic PF95+ series. We have a few in the photolab at work and they are crisp and sharp as could be! Granted, that is the 19" model, not a 22" version.

Like Rhin0 said, I have the NEC 2070sb. I do not notice any of the problems other posters have mentioned. The text is only blurry in SB2 mode, which I wouldn't recommend ANYONE use for 2D. I have brightness set all the way down to 0. Contrast is up high. Picture is perfect. No jittering, geo issues, or anything like that.

It's possible my eyes aren't as sensitive as others. I had been using a Dell 19" (rebadged Sony Trinitron) for the past 5 years until this NEC (just got the NEC a month ago).

I'd get the Samsung just because I got a 900NF several years ago and it amazes me everytime I use it still. Very high quality monitor.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

I'm trying to gather info on the IBM C220P - as we have a special deal on it......Anyone know anything (its supposed to be a continuation of the P275)?

For anybody with the 2070sb - try giving it it's own wall plug - with no UPS or Surge protector or splitter box. I've heard you need top quality Shielding in your UPS or SURGEprotector if you want to use it with your Mitsu. I'm guessing youve already removed any TV's, other monitor, speakers, wireless form its surounding area.
I would like very much to hear what video cards people are using with their Mitsubishi 2070sb and what results they get. I want to clear up the cause for the text jitter issues.

About the Viewsonic model - P225f - I heard it was great and wanted to get one but then I started hearing it has a reliability problem - can anyone comment on that - ie. how long youv'e had them in operation...

About the Sony FW900 (24 inch) this one reportedly has slightly lower image quality than its 21 inch F520 or C520K brother. As far as I know the F520's are no longer produced by Sony but I might be wrong.

Thanks All!

Where is this info coming from?

If you read the website, the C220p can sync up to 160KHz! :Q
That equates to 140Hz @ 1920x1200 actually!
This is the equation to determine the max vertical refresh the monitor can sync to.
fV = fH / # of horizontal lines x 0.95
160,000Hz / 1200 x 0.95 = 140Hz!
