Which 4k television should I get?

Here are the requirements

1. 55"
2. >= 120hz
3. not curved screen
4. not Sony
5. 2015 model preferred

About #4, the last 2 sets I've had have been Sonys and I've had major issues with both so I'm not giving them another chance.

Here's the one I'm considering.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55J...98011,p_n_feature_nine_browse-bin:10650190011

If you scroll down the the mfr section, it's all of the highlights.

It has some nice features, is the right size and can handle 4k 3d. I don't really care about about 3d but I plan on owning this for at least a few years so I'd rather have the capability, but it's not essential.

How far are you sitting?

If you're watching 4K content, you'll want an even bigger screen than for 1080p to take advantage of the extra resolution.

I sit pretty close. From screen to eyeball is 8 or 9 feet.

edit: btw, the reason for the 55" limitation is that all my a/v stuff is on a mobile rack which is only 48" wide. So the biggest I can go w/o having the support posts block the screen is 55".

LG. Couldn't be happier with mine. Unbelievable when you have the right content. "Magic" remote is a bit gimmicky but no one uses a stock remote anyways.

Do you care about input lag? Like for gaming and using it from your PC perhaps? All the LG 4k sets have pretty high input lag ranging from 60ms to over 100ms. The UB9500 is rated at 73ms which is considered bad. If that matters or not to you is another thing. It'll really only show up if you are a heavy gamer or are sensitive to it when doing PC work and moving your mouse cursor around. Sony and Samsung have much better numbers with some sets going as low as 17ms. Though I don't think Samsung makes a flat UHD screen. If they do I haven't seen it.

The original link is a flat rather than curved screen.

According to Consumer Reports, you're right about Sony reliability. It's slightly better than either Samsung or LG - 3% compared to 4%. Still, I'm not taking any chances.

My first hdtv from them was a projection model that had the light engine break down twice in five years. The one have now didn't even last a year before it developed screen defects.

On the other hand, the Samsung monitors I have seem to last forever so I'm partial to them.

Actually I found that Samsung does indeed make 4k sets that are flat. I too prefer flat as I wall mount all my TVs.

So back to the question I had for you, is input lag a concern at all? The Samsung UN55JU6500 is flat, a 2015 model, and has an input lag rating of 27ms which is good. Much better input lag than the LG but I have not seen either one in person. Amazon has the Samsung for $1097

I don't think I would notice any lag but I don't really know. I'd rather get something with the better specs.

What is the difference between the 6500 and 7100. The first on seems to have half the refresh rate.

I believe all tvs are 60hz and not true 120hz even though it's in the specs. My Sony won't go to 120hz from my PC, only 60.

Maybe someone can chime in with more details than I can on that.

Nope. And the input frequency accepted isn't the important part - it's the ability to show 24hz content (movies!) without having to show alternate frames for different durations.

Just to clarify are you saying nope that there aren't true 120hz tvs or nope as in I am incorrect?

You're wrong. Sony and Vizio 4k models take 1080p at 120hz, though they don't do 4k 4:4:4 at 60hz. Only Samsungs do that, I think (but Samsungs don't do 120hz input).

I appreciate the comments so far but I guess not a lot of people here are really into this stuff. I was going to post something over on AVS but they seem to have a single thread dedicated to recommendations and it's a little too overwhelming.

I'm probably not going to buy anything until this set gets worse. It's still viewable but just annoying. But it seems to be developing new problems so eventually I'm not going to have a choice and I'll have to pull the trigger.

4K is not really needed at that size and distance.. I sit about the same away and cannot make out the individual pixels in text with my 60 inch.. it would take a 65-70 inch to start making the difference noticeable.

Going to a 65 inch would net you 40% more screen space and start to make the benefits of 4K evident at those distances. Going to a 75 inch is around 90% more screen space.. almost 2 55 inch televisions put next to each other.

Better to get a quality 1080p over a crappy 4K... though I admit if I was buying a new set at this point I'd probably try for 4K... simply because I already have a 60 inch so my next set HAS to be bigger... a 70 inch.

That's good to know. Personally I would only go 4k if I had some content for it which I don't. Later this year with the new blu-Ray standard (if there are enough titles being released) it might be something I would consider for my next set.

I've not seen anything about it since the spring, though it was suggested it was coming out in June. I expect it will make an appearance in August/September now.
Thanks. It looks like it's going to be significantly more expensive but that's fine if it's really better. Here's a review of an LG OLED 1080p model that is less than glowing - http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...isn-t-the-best-tv-we-ve-ever-tested/index.htm

I'm also concerned about longevity and reliability. If I'm going to pay close to $5k for something, I want to know with reasonable certainty that it's going to last at least 5 years. I've heard that there were problems with burnout in earlier OLED televisions.
