hey guys im new to the forum. im trying to decide b/w the pioneer 108 and nec 3500. i'm looking to burn 8x -R media at 12x speeds. i read the 3500 can do it with

Taiyo Yuden 8x (TYG02)
Mitsubishi Kagaku 8x (MCC02RG20)

im leaning towards the pioneer right now, but what 8x -R media is good for burning at 12x with the 108? I want to use the 1.10 stock firmware initially too. So far i think i read the ritek G05's are successful? thanks in advance!

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, my friend. I absolutely cannot decide between the two.
The thing that may sway me, however, is that every Pioneer DVD-writer I've seen (my 105, 107s at work etc) suck at overburning. Always gets "invalid block address" at the end. That, for me, is enough to sway me towards the NEC, whos products have always felt a little "cheap" (physically) to me.

Sigh.

Forgot to mention, the regular DAO Overburning (Disc At Once) doesn't work, period. DAO/96 works, but gives that error. I've tried every legit and hacked firmware there is, same problem.

Overburning or not, the NEC won't burn Ritek 8x media at speeds even CLOSE to 8x. There's no official firmware either. I'm so let down by this drive that I'll definately reconsider buying NEC in the future. Even selecting 8x in Nero will only burn the media at 4x and Roxio only offers 4x speeds. I've tried 3 different brands on media too...

I've RMA'd the NEC at this point and have the Pioneer on order.

Pioneer reads DVDRAM while the NEC does Bit read/writes
Ricoh blanks do well on both as well

with dvd media still being so new. i wouldn't burn media at higher then rated speed if you want it to last.

I just bought a NEC. Been reading reviews and comparisons between the Pioneer and 3500 and it seems to be a coin flip on which is better.

One thing was clear when reading the reviews, the firmware is immature for both these drives; I don't think one can judge the true performance until the technology and media matures.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that firmware updates will improve media compatibility. And hopefully, dual layer media will come down in price some so we can take advantage of the true capability of these drives.

Yes, thanks for the post Saber800., I just ordered a 108.

I'm wondering why so many want to burn at such a fast speed?
Are they making that many DVDs?
I know it's like overclocking a cpu, people want the fastest, but I think it's crazy at times.
And what about the quality if you burn that fast?

Write quality can be an issue when you're burning at faster speeds but quality DVD burners will write with the same excellent quality at all speeds it is rated for, even above those the media is rated for. However, the only way to be sure that write quality is excellent is to have a burner that measures PI/PO error rates like the Plextor PX-712(S)A I know that in that drive for example burning say TDK +R 4x at 8x provides excellent results as does burning Verbatim +R 8x at 12x In the end what matters is the burner quality and firmware and quality of the media.
