It's the only macross I like, the CGI is cool as hell. But with only one eps to go on, I'm not sure how a newbie would like that. It all depends on what genre Medellon likes: Mecha (Evangelion, Escaflowne, Patlabor ...), Comedy (Golden Boy, Love Hina, I My Me Strawberry Eggs ...), Action (Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Ghost in the Shell SAC ...), Depressing (Grave of the Fireflies is the only movie that comes to mind), and the list goes on. Ninja Scroll and Princess Mononoke are good movies to start out with.

u dont know what akira is? its one of the if not the best anime movie ever made, its been around for a long time, Collectors edition is sold at EB and places like that in the metal casing... just a sick anime
I know what Akira is son. I was just answering his question.

I would go with Macross plus, Perfect Blue, or the Samurai X Ova's Trust and Betrayal to start with. All three are diffrent types of movies, and each is considered one of the best the they genre that it is in.

While you can watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or anything made by Hayao Miyazaki and walk away feeling that you seen a good show, the ones that I listed will make you feel like you just watched somthing special. Corse, with anime peoples ideas of what is great differ greatly, so take what I said with a grain of salt if you will.

I really didn't like akira. It wasn't very entertaining and I was very bored.

Another vote for Naruto. Also GTO is pretty funny. Escaflowne kicked ass too.

Wow, the one of the few people to actually read the question! Yes, second the recommendation for the Macross Plus Movie.
Escaflowne does have a movie as well... heck, I knew the translator who did it when I was in college so it's good work but it's still too much to condense into a movie.

Didn't really like Akira (bad translation from the manga), Ghost in the Shell wasn't too good either (another bad manga translation), and Ninja Scroll I just flat out didn't enjoy... though Vampire HunterD is decent for such an old anime. X the Movie is yet another bad comic translation. It happens when you try to condense an entire series into a few hours.

The MSGundam movies (I-III) as well as Char's Counterattack + F91 are all the Gundam movies since you'll prolly like mecha stuffs.

I'm lazy and I still haven't watched Spirited Away (despite having a copy), but of Studio Ghibli stuffs, I liked Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind & Mononoke Hime the most. Almost nobody overlooks Grave of the Fireflies because it's so depressing.

One anime movie nearly everyone overlooks despite it's colossal importance to the industry, GAINAX's "Wings of Honneamise." Before Gunbuster, Evangelion, Kare Kano, etcetc that made the studio famous... the first big budget, total non-adapted story for Japanese film/anime.

Asking which anime movie is like asking "what live US TV show for a foreigner?"

you know it's not like you gain ultra hardcore points on your tally or something just by spreading that mindset..... after years of subs I decided to give dubs a chance one time and you know what? not half bad. cowboy bebop dub is great, lain dub is great.... all the big movies have top notch dubs. Princess Mononoke comes to mind for sure... Cowboy Bebop the Movie... Ghost in the Shell...

I personally can't stand having to aim my eyes at the lower half of the screen throughout the entire movie, maybe it's just me but I seemed to miss out a ton of big shots because I was too busy reading... seems like a waste you know?

Wee, all licensed animé (and out and easily buyable in US) all illegal! We sure love warez here on AT

Ehem, sorry, I just cannot stand people who pirate copy things that they can easily buy on dvd and hurt the hobby in several way: by not supporting the firms and thus depriving them of money to release thigns and by giving the community a bad name.

/rant over.

Good movies for a n00b, hmm, I'll just mention some of the other suggestions made before.
Anything Ghibli (Spirited Away, Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies among the most well-known [and mentioned before in the thread ].
Akira is a classic and most people like it.
Same goes for Ghost in the Shell. In both cases they are not as good as the mangas (comics) they are based on though.
Ruruni Kenshin OVAs are good albeit bloody and sad.

And as for subs or dubs: I agree that subtitles with the original language is best but dubs might be more acceptable to casusal viewers (like the thread-starter sound like) as japanese do sound quite strange to people not used to it and not everybody like "reading a movie" and probably isn't used to it and thus might read slower.
