What? SaltBoy didn't say "Spirited Away" yet?

In addition to the commonly-cited Studio Ghibli movies (Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke), Castle in the Sky (sometimes also called Laputa -- but that's not a title suitable for international distribution) was recently released in a very nice 2-disc DVD set.

I also recommend Castle of Cagliostro (recognizable to some old-school LD video gamers as Cliff Jumper), or any of the Lupin (sometimes Rupan) III series. It's often compared to James Bond, although the cartoonishness makes it more Jackie Chan wacky than Pierce Brosnan action-oriented.

I'm also intensely fond of the movie Wings of Honneamise, which is about a fledgeling space program in a society where space travel has not yet been achieved. It's much slower than most anime, but the visuals continually leave me stunned.

While you can watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or anything made by Hayao Miyazaki and walk away feeling that you seen a good show, the ones that I listed will make you feel like you just watched somthing special. Corse, with anime peoples ideas of what is great differ greatly, so take what I said with a grain of salt if you will.

Please dont call it Samutai X.

Kthxbye,

Well, if I tell him to get Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal dvd's he would be hard pressed to find them as there is no such disk made. Yea, I know that it sucks that they have that stupid Samurai X title, by that is the title.

The old Record of Lodoss, not the new OVA for it. Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust has really good animation, story is alright if you know Vampire Hunter D.

Edit
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust I mean

If you watch Evangelion, don't watch the movies. That is all I have to add.
Very controversial comment.

For now I would say skip some of the movies and watch a few series until you get a good anime base cause some of the movies are really out there, in most of the series they gradually introduce you to some of the crazy stuff... cowboy bebop is good, as is trigun, .hack//SIGN, nadesico, escaflowne, there are lots of good series, but if you really want to watch a movie that could start you off watch slayers the movie, or spirited away.

Can't speak for the other series, but Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were dubbed extremely well.

Studio Ghibli's stuff (in my order of preference)
1. Castle in the Sky
2. Kiki's Delivery Service
3. Spirited Away
4. Princess Mononoke
(Just got My Neighbor Totoro, gonna watch it tonight)

I started out watching Giant Robot anime in the late 70's, then later Starblazers (which probably influenced George Lucas), and even later, Robotech (still the best series EVAH!). Loved Dragonball Z, and now enjoying Inuyasha (on Cartoon Network at 11:30PM CST).

I found Akira boring, and extremely disappointing after reading the Manga. I didn't think Ghost in the Shell was that great, either.

Also, Fist of the North Star is great if you like martial arts-type violence with blood spraying everywhere.

I was really surprised by how much I liked the Studio Ghibli stuff mentioned above. For Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service, considering that there ain't that much violence in them, I really really liked them.

I picked up the Bubblegum Crisis 4 DVD set on FS/FT. Very fun and violent. Hot chicks in power armor with cool weapons.

Tekkaman Blade! Hehe if you can get your hands on it. Anyway Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Hellsing, Berserk. Those are animes that will make you go wow, holy god. There all on DVD too. So if you got the cash, or got the friends that have em, go get them!

I'm president of the OIT Anime Club, and, as such, I recommend these series/movies:

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
Haibane Renmei (Charcoal Feather Federation)
Witch Hunter Robin
Naruto *Woohoo! Sexy no Jutsu!*
Vision of Escaflowne
Trigun
Aa! Megami-sama! (Oh My Goddess!)
Love Hina
Chobits
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland
Ranma 1/2
The Pokemon episode that caused seizures
Transformers
Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)
Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
Kiki's Delivery Service

I also recommend Grave of the Fireflies, but only if you're trying to get yourself in the mood for suicide. It is seriously the most depressing movie EVER made. I made the mistake of watching it TWICE, and my dr. had to increase my dosage of antidepressants afterwards.
