Even relatively innocuous sites have tried to slip something malicious in via a poor association with a particular ad company and thus a banner placed on their site. I feel sorry for the state of someone's computer that refers to most of the AVs as "bloatware". Even during a scan, Kaspersky only uses 1% of my CPU and takes only 140MB of memory. When not scanning it doesn't even register on CPU use and uses only 28.5MB. On a modern machine, this is an issue for some?
I'm a network security major, and I've learned several times over from sources more reliable than anecdotal forum warriors that MSE is taking security in your own hands. It's not that effective of a solution.
