Which brand hard drive is better? 5400rpm or 7200rpm.

So which one is better:
The Maxtor 40GB 5400rpm, ATA/100, 2MB vs. Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm, ATA/66, 2MB????

I saw a magazine article a week or two ago from a respectable magazine ( sorry i can't remember which one and i don't wanna point you guys in the wrong direction searching for it ) but they tested all different types of HD's. Turned out Maxtor DiamondMax+ was the best overall. Speedy, quiet, and well priced. They've also got a great RMA program ( trust me, i've been there ). . . . Quantum makes some great SCSI Drives though.

The 7200rpm is faster. ATA-100 vs ATA-66 is rather insignificant.

I say IBM 7200 hands down. It may cost a little more, but it is worth it.

I'd get a 7200RPM ATA/66 maxtor drive..I prefer IBM, but the Diamondmax's are fast and cheap.

Go for whichever is less expensive: IBM or Maxtor. They're both equally fast, quiet, and great .

Maxtor and Quantums HDD divisions have joined so there is really no difference in quality and technology (Maxtor produces both lines these days).

I would go for the Maxtor, despite the bad rumours Maxtor drives are very good these days, they are both fast and reliable.

The DM60+ series are very good drives, you will not be sorry if you buy one of those.

Untimate speed goes now to the 7200 rpm drive but I do not think the real world performance is that significant to justify the cost increase vs 5400. I've had Quantum and IBM drives in the past. Both developed bad clusters after several months. Currently I'm running two 46.1 5400 RPM Maxtors at raid 0. They were originally 66's but if you go to the maxtor home page, software, a utility is available to convert them over to 100's. I'm still not sure the speed increase for raid was worth the added cost for the apps I'm running, but the conversion sofware was free so why not!

IBM does have a rather strick return policy but it's not set in stone. Really depends who you talk to. Both manufactures have a diagnostic utility they want you to run prior to getting an RMA. The IBM drive with the bad clusters I had was restored using their utility and it's currently in my childrens unit. It's been free of bad clusters for around four months now. Unfortunatly, when you use their utility for bad clusters, it wipes the drive clean. Warns you it's going to do it though.

7200 RPM is faster no doubt, thats like asking which is faster, 66 miles per hour , or 100 miles per hour, the high number will always be faster. ATA 100 / ATA 66, doesn't have too much of a speed increase, but again, ATA 100 will be faster than ATA 66, it's like ATA 66 with a bit more kick at some times.

platter density MATTERS...

who cares about the 20g platter WD drives...they still can't outperform the ibm 75gxp 15g platter drives...

the only decent 20g platter + 7200rpm drives are the fujitsu mpg series ones...
even their 5400rpm perform quite well..virtually on a par w/ a lot of the 7200rpm drives..

i'd go for maxtor over quantum any day..

I would go with the 7200 rpm as i have seen a substantial performance increase. As far as qauntam goes its crap, i have seen so many of them come to a grinding death especially the unfortune BigFoot, but maybe 1 or 2 maxtors die

ATA100 will yield you virtually nothing over ATA66.

Western Digital, Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate, IBM and Fujitsu all make good hard drives.

Personally I favour IBM, but all of those are good drives.

ATA100 makes no difference, and 7200rpm is the way to go.

Option 2. The 40GV is IBM's value line, the 75GXP would be more comparable to the Diamond Max + 40gig.

I like anything but WD. I've owned Connor, Western Digital, Micropolis, Seagate, Fujitsu, and IBM. The only one of those to kick the bucket was the Western Digital (and that Connor is 9 years old now, still kickin' at 80mb ). At work we've also had LOTS of WD's die on us. Luckily when Gateway sent the replacements they sent Quantum .

You want 7200rpm of 5400 though. Faster load times and such. As for ATA100 vs. ATA66, if they're the same price and brand then naturally go for ATA/100, but if you see an ATA66 drive that's a better brand than the ATA100 or if it's cheaper (but still good brand), then get ATA66.
