Which brand is better, Quantum or Maxtor? Which one is faster? 5400rpm or 7200rpm? Does the ATA/100 Vs. ATA/66 really matters?

So which drive is better, IBM 40GB GV, 5400rpm, ATA/100, 512K buffer VS. Maxtor 40GB, 7200rpm, ATA/66?

I like the Maxtor 7200 drives ( I have one). ATA100 and ATA66 make virtually no difference. Most harddrives will peak at 35-40 sustained data transfer (barely utilizing ata33). The only thing ata100 will improve is the burst packets of data. 7200 will give you a fairly better advantage in load times, bootup time...... etc.

rpm matters more than platter size, but still try to get the latest model with higher density platters, it improves transfer rates.

I have a Quantum 7200 RPM, ATA-100, 20 gig. It's really nice, I get good Sandra and HDTach scores(just as good as my IBM 75GXP), it's pretty quiet too.

Best - IBM (spendy)
Great - Maxtor (good all around)
Good - Quantum

Basically if you cannot afford an IBM Hard Drive then buy a Maxtor.

Don't forget the new Western Digital 40 gig 7200 drives. They have gone to 20 gb platters. Check out the review at The Storage Review ( goto "leaderboard&quot:

I have a thing against Maxtors... I've been using a Quantum drive for over an year now. No problems what so ever. I think the Quantums have a faster seek time, but that depends on the models though.

I read a mag reveiw in pcworld said the maxtor 30g 7200 was faster then the ibm and by a good margin , jan 2001 issue. The maxtor also foung files faster than the ibm. This is all of course dependant on the accuracy of the mag. the quantum was not even close in the reveiw

<<So Quantum is better than Maxtor drives in term of speed and quietness?>>

No, Quantum is better speed wise, albeit only a little, and they're generally louder than Maxtors. Since Quantum belongs to Maxtor now it doesnt really make a difference, they're both great manufacturers.

Maxtor is better by a hair (when did maxtor become high quality now? used to be Quantum only.. ) 7200rpm gives you faster seek and transfer rate(also hotter of course). if you just need storage space, 5400 rpm will do.

Between the rpm, 7200rpm drive of course!
I would go with ATA100 if it isn't a cost factor, otherwise it doesn't offer much performance difference to justify paying higher...IMHO.

<<So WD is faster than Maxtor and the Quantum?>>

I would strongly recommend Maxtor. I have used a lot of their 7200RPM drives and they are the BEST. I have no complaints whatsoever (which is unusual). BTW, when Maxtor says they have a "no quibble" RMA policy they really mean it!

OK. Maxtor it is. So does the ATA/66 matters that much when running RAID compares to ATA/100? So what is the newest model for Maxtor? How is this newest model compares to the Diamond Max Plus 40?
Thanks.

The newest model is the DiamondMax Plus 60, currently the swiftest 20GB platter 7200rpm hard drive.

You guys really got me confused here.
So which one is the better of these two:

Maxtor DM+ 45 30GB
IBM 75GXP 30GB

which one of those cause i was leaning towards getting a 75GXP cause everyone says it's faster and quieter. Correct me if i'm wrong please. Maybe i should start a poll (Idead brewing)

DM+45 is slower because its not Maxtor's newest offering, the DM+60 is their newest and it matches and/or exceeds the IBM in many performance areas.
