I currently have a cable modem and two pc's connected vai a hub. I am paying for an extra ip. I now have 2 more pc's I would like to have internet access. I was told by a friend of mine, what I would cancel that extra ip, and get a cable router inplace of the hub and I could have my four pc's be able to access the web. I plan on making one of my pc's a web/ftp server. I also need all four pc to be able to access eath others shared files. All four pc's have a ethernet card and I have Cat5 wires (RJ45) in place.

So which cable router would allow me to do this? I have seen cable routers on pricewatch starting at $25.

Thanks for any input/advice.

Im using the Linksys and am quite pleased. You can get them with wireless access points embedded too if that interests you.

Hmm, If you are going to run an FTP/web server, why not continue to pay for your second IP and connect that computer
directly to the cable modem, then use a a router for all other computers. This way, you don't have to mess with port
forwarding and you can make the computers hooked to the router more secure, while still having full access to your ftp/web server.

I really can't comment on those littel stand alone boxes you can buy, but I have had excellent luck with the Freesco project.
Essentially Freesco allows you to take an older computer(386 or better) with two NICS and it emulates a cisco router. If you
have the hardware all ready it is FREE!!

Freesco link
Freesco link two

May not be for you, but I think that if you are looking for router solutions, you at least owe it to yourself to check it out. I think it
is a better solution than the routers that places like best buy sell, and did I mention that it is FREE?

Edit:
Just noticed this in FS/T forums: cheap computers that would work great for FREESCO
That P166 system would do nicely.
