Which cable to use?

I have a choice of two cables to use on my new monitor to my graphics card. HDMI or DP. Would one of them provide better resolution then the other? I hope to pull the full 2560 X 1440 from my card.

I'd use DP simply because it's a better format...but that specific resolution will work with both cables.

That said...DP cables are more durable, have a locking mechanism, DP doesn't drive up costs of hardware, and are generally always a step ahead of HDMI in the 4K and 8K area (and properly support 21:9).

I'd always support DP just cause....


If the Monitor/GPU is HDMI 1.4...then I'd definitely use DP...even DP 1.2 is superior to HDMI 1.4

As long as the monitor supports HDMI 1.3+, I would choose whichever cable is more cost effective.

If you have a high refresh rate monitor keep in mind that the highest refresh rate your going to get over 1.3 is 75Hz (or 92Hz if you do custom timings). Although if you have a video card and monitor that supports HDMI 2.0 you can go up to 144Hz.

old HDMI on a 5450 is max 1920x 1080 @ 60hz so your only choice is DP which is the better standard anyway. Locking connector and made for PC

Sorry for the confusion:

I just realized that my card does not have DP but the monitor will have it [ cable included ] the monitor will not have DVI. So with only HDMI will I be limited to only 1920 X 1080. I will be installing a new monitor Dell U2715H .

In that case why not just use DVI? Even if you don't have a DL-DVI cable the monitor will most likely have one in the box.

But to answer your question, I think you need a active adapter but they're expensive (and probably add input lag).

might be cheaper to grab a new cheap video card than mess with active adapters.......you need DVI or DP for 1440p unless its a new nvidia maxwell part with hdmi 2 which you obviously don't

" Dell U2715H monitor does support 2560x1440 resolution via HDMI. I have used it myself. You do need to have a compatible graphics output capable of that HDMI resolution. Intel HD Graphics 4600 is integrated on-chip graphics, and its max resolution output depends on the chipset and PC configuration by the computer manufacturer. You should check your computer specification for the max resolution output via HDMI. As for this U2715H monitor, it supports 2560x1440 resolution via HDMI @ up to 60Hz."

No, the current limit of HDMI is 1920x1080. To get the 2560x1440 resolution you have to use the DP (Display Port) or Mini Display Port connection. They are currently working on HDMI 2 that will support higher resolutions than 1920x1080 but this is not available yet. If you use an HDMI connection you will only get 1920x1080 resolution.

First, max resolution over HDMI depends on what type of output/input the video card/display has. Your U2715H probably has an HDMI1.4 input (which is good up to 4K@30Hz or 2560x1600 @ 60Hz), but your 5450 is only rated for max 1920x1200 @ 60Hz, so you can't use HDMI.

Your video card has VGA, but I wouldn't bother with that.

So that leaves you with the DVI output on your 5450. Since your monitor doesn't come with a DVI input, you'll have to go from DVI--> DP or HDMI. Your best bet is DVI-->HDMI, like this cable.

Edit - Nevermind, looks like that cable is single-link DVI. You'll have to find a dual-link DVI --> HDMI cable.

There is no such thing as Dual Link DVI->HDMI. Unless I'm misinformed HDMI has always been a single link which is why everyone was so annoyed when it first came out.
