im going for a 40x/12x/40x IDE recorder... i like the plextor one, for only $135 (oem) @ newegg...

ive been away from the cdrw scene for a while now... is plextor still the king? is this a wise buy?

Plextors are good, but if you want the same quality with less money, then get a Lite-on. A retail version of the lite-on drive with the same specs as the Plextor is only $97 shipped from newegg.com.

nice... im a lil skeptical about not-so-famous brands but liteon is a relatively known one... i heard there are many issues with them though?

If you've got the extra money then the Plextor drive is arguably the best available, Yamaha's drive is quite nice also.
If your looking to save a bit of money then Lite-On's drive is almost as good and a decent amount cheaper.

The new Teac 40x is the fastest, according to CDspeed, the same people that wrote Nero's drive testing sofware.

And they're cheap.

PLextor is nice, Yamaha is very overrated and expensive. Lite-on is a hell of a drive too.

*I* prefer Teac.

thx for the heads up!! im definitely going for teac now!!

theirs is a 40/10 as opposed to 40/12 but its faster, only $4 more and has 8mb cache vs 2mb for the liteon.... thats a huge advantage IMO

liteon 32/12/40 is a great drive and best bang for buck at newegg (includes Nero) . Plextor software is long in the tooth...

I can't believe nobody said anything about TDK. I have one and it does the job. Can't say much about the price cause it was givin to me. But TDK also has a 40X burner.

Another vote for Lite-on. Those drives rock.

The reason nobody mentioned the TDK is probably because its not an outstanding product...whereas the LiteOn and the Plextors are top performers.
