Which class should I take.

Currently I am enrolled in.

Financial Mathematics
Real Analysis (2nd course, theory of derivatives)
Ordinary Differential Equations (Advance course, senior level)


I need to decide on 1 more class, my options are:
Combinitorics
Complex Analysis
Convex Geometry.
Numerical Analysis in Differential Equations.

Which 1 should I take.

First tell us: what major are you, and what do you want to do in the future. It's hard to help pick classes in isolation.

Double major in Stats and Math, thinking about graduate school in applied math or stats. Plan to work in the field first, thinking something like data analysis for a year or so, then apply for graduate school.

If you are going into Diff EQ, numerical Analysis is very powerful as there are many DEQ that are extremely difficult to solve analytically.

If you wish to pursue Diff EQ (as in, applied math) you "need":
1. ODE
2. PDE
3. Numerical Analysis
4. Linear Algebra (Matrix techniques for multiple DiffEQ simultaneously)
5. Class where you apply Bessel Function, Frobenius Method techniques in addition to all of the above.

If you want to focus on your Stat,
Combinatorics is pretty important. I dont know much about Stat though.

Diff EQ was the most useless class to me as a ChemE.

I agree with the other poster and go for Numerical Analysis if you are interested in an applied graduate math degree. After that I would choose Complex analysis.

By the way, why Financial Mathematics?

I enjoyed the couple of classes I took in numerical analysis as part of my BS CS, so I'd recommend Numerical Analysis in Differential Equations for the fun factor regardless of how useful it will be.

Operations Research in the business department was also interesting, approaching applied math from a different angle.

I am taking Financial Mathematics, because it deals with Stochatic Analysis with Finance, which I am interested in. It applies probability, ODE, PDEs to finance. Seemed interesting. Though mostly theory.

If I do take Numerical Analysis in Differential Equations, I will also take Numerical Analysis in Linear Algebra in the 3rd quarter. If I take Complex I would take the first class next quarter, and the second in sprint. Same with Combitorics, if I decide to take it next quarter, in the sprint quarter I will take Algebraic Combinitorics. So this helps decide my class for next spring too.

But I am leaning towards Numerical Analysis.

Are Numerical Analysis in Differential Equations, and Numerical Analysis in Linear Algebra very different from each other?
