i don't think any of these companies will. Microsoft and intel are too big. via just doesn't seem like it since they have a new chipset coming out. Amd however...I'm just waiting for them to make their big break through.

I just hope Covad doesn't go under. I applied for DSL first through Rhythms who went out of business, and now Covad who might go out of business ... Once Covad goes, then there's no other DSL provider in my area except for *shivers* Verizon (who wont even provide access to my apartment because I can't do line sharing!)

Let's hope VIA, it wouldnt' hurt my feelings any to see them die.

Although they did donate a lot of money for a chipset manufacturer...

Their chipsets still suck though.

You're just mad because VIA tromped on your precious nForce chipset, Tromp, Tromp!

of those 4 I would say AMD has the greatest probability of going belly-up. Why?

Intel: They have more cash on hand than most countries on this planet.

Microsuck: Ditto. They could probably buy Intel.

Via: most companies in Asia are just small parts of other HUGH conglomerates... with tons of financial backing. It'd close before bankrupcy

AMD: with only Athlon and Flash going for it... adn nobody buying much of either... AMD seems like it'd be hurting the worst.

Why oh why did I buy AMD stock a month or two ago???

I don't give a sh!t about nforce, it's all about dual AMD if AMD at all. I'm seriously considering giving them another shot with their own chipset, if I do it'll be a duallie 1.4 gig Athlon system.

Uhhhh.... none of the above.

Chapter 11 (reorg) or chapter 7 (liquidation) bankruptcy means that a company cannot pay it bills. This usually happens when there are not enough cash or marketable securities to pay the bills. AMD is the "weakest" of the 4 with "only" $1 billion in cash. This is followed by M$ with $9B and Intel with $31B. VIA is part of the larget Formosa Plastic congomerate which is one of the largest companies is Taiwan. None of these companies are in any danger of collapsing.

Sure companies will announce a "$100m charge" but there is very little cash going out. It is usally related to the writing down of inventory, disposal of assets, and writing off of goodwill.

Accounting is just fuzzy math.

Personally I haven't had a better board than my epox 8kta3, thank god for the soundblaster incompatibility or i would've never gotten my santa cruz. Anyway, Via seems a lot bigger now than they were this time last year, and they seem to just keep growing. SIS and nForce might have given them a scare, but kt266a proved they're in it for the long run. Stablility hasn't been an issue with the last 4 or so Via boards I've dealt with, hopefully they'll keep the trend up.

as for the original question, none of the above

I heard that Exodus was VERY close to filing chapter 11.

If you don't know who Exodus is, you don't know jack about the web hosting industry.

EDIT: oh...and I second a "none of the above" vote

The Exodus filing is now official.

The web hosting biz is hurting ... many of the major players (IBM, Intel, etc.) have exited the biz, or cut back significantly, and luckily had other business profits to fall back on. Exodus was obviously a major player, but they unfortunately did not have other business profits to supplement their bottom line.

I'm ticked 'cause they have drug Global Crossing down with them ... :|
