how/why? I think the way they treat their employees is fantastic. So what if they charge a premium for their items?

Sony by a long shot.
The disaster they have brought to the entire AV industry over the last three decades trumps all.
Could you elaborate on that, please?

Proprietory formats. It's like they didn't learn from Beta. They try to muscle their way to maintain their crumbling superiority. Sure that's just normal business. But I believe it stifles development.
Every AV format there is always Sony and Everybody else.
Thank goodness that that are crumbling so much.

Anticompetitive practices.
They frequently open stores next door to competitors (even if they have another nearby) to drive that competitor out of business.
Also, there was a local coffee chain that was going to put a store in a mall that already had starbucks. Starbucks said that if the mall didn't give them the space then they'd pull their existing store out. Of course the mall caved and now there are two starbucks. Yay.

having to sit through 4 splash screens, most of which are advertising, that you can't skip, is annoying as hell.

This is called competition. How is it anti-competitive?

Obviously the mall wanted Starbucks, and not the other guys.

Hasn't anyone figured out a way to hack that?
I know they did for BF1942.
