for gaming i'd get the i7-990x

Why? It's just plain worse than 2500(K) for present-gen games.

That's why Intel's current lineup is crazy on acid -- their $200 i5 processor is not just better value for money, it's just plain better than the most expensive high-end cpu they make for most everyday tasks. There's just no sense in it.

The best way to compare a quad-core Sandy VS a quad-core Bloomfield in a benchmark is to turn off the turbo on both chips and run them at the same exact speeds.

X58 is dead. If you need the triple channel or tri-SLI go for it but 99% of people will be better off going LGA1155. I'm half thinking of swapping my X58 system with an LGA1155 as I'm building a NAS, but since it makes no sense for an X58 to serve as a NAS, I'll have to take the lame system. Hahaha.

You already said that. The question I asked was why? And I'm still interested -- why would you buy a cpu with 2 extra cores, when doing so makes all the individual cores worse, and basically any game can't use more than 4 anyway?

That means absolutely nothing.

2500K/2600K will consistently outperform the 980X/990X. The architecture is older, the platform is dead, and the price is ridiculous.

Sorry, but was your purpose to point out how much i7 990x sucked?
You can easily get better scores with i5 2500K in everything but the synthetics.

Post your better results from your system then.

What's with the n00b uprising here?

There you go crisis warhead 1920*1200 0*AA, now I know you are going to come back and say "Yeah but with ""these"" settings the 990x is faster" But as you are trying to complare a £750 CPU to a £240 CPU let alone the fact the MOBO and RAM are going to cost you more on the 1336 i think i am allowed to pick the test parameters as long as they invole a "real" game and not a benchmark.

You call the duel I pick the weapons, and i pick the 990x's shoddy minimum frame rates 40 vs 56 on the 2600k (both cpu's overclocked)

So we can pretty much say at any price point below a 990x with quad top spec GPU's a SB system will be able to afford more hardware on board and smash a 990x.

I can feel the flames approaching so please realise i am talking about GAMING only here.

You're Tom Logan from Overclock3D? It's nice that they allow you to review and keep the hardware for your own personal system. The 990X OC averaged higher. The non-OC even more so. I do know that MY system (the system that I build and personally own) would score much higher using the same settings they used.

Yeah sorry was refering to the minimum frame rates just edited, and no LOL i'm not Tom Logan. Just pointing out without an extremly high budget the 2600k will be cheaper and therefore be able to spend more on GPU's and outperform a 990x. As the OP wanted to choose between the 960 and the 2600k I don't see why we are even talking about the 990x TBH although it is an awsome piece of kit the extra cores really don't give it any more than a minimal advantage when talking purely gaming although for other software situations it truly is the king of the hill by a long shot
