Let's say all CPU's are running retail fans and they are NOT overclocked!

AMD-64
AMD XP mobile bartons
P4's

i want something that runs cooler...doesnt have to be the fatest...summer is coming

64's with cool and quiet isn't that hot. Don't know about the XP. My 2.4 P4 used to run around 45C idle.

Idle temps 33C CPU and 30C Motherboard temps from ASUS Probe. Where I'm at summer is usually year round except when it rains.

Well, thats a tough call, but I am fairly certain that the Athlon64 is cooler than the P4. Mine runs 32c idle with the mobo at 30c. The mobile barton might be a little cooler, but you loose a lot of power. Summer or not, that shouldn;t be your only criteria.
Edit: And I don't even use cool and quiet at those temps. With it, they would be even better.

Wow what kind of heatsink you got? He said stock heatsink which I'm using now. Room temps are around 75F-80F here.

I have a Thermaltake silent boost K8 (not retail), but in several threads people have said theirs runs about the same temp as mine. For a true test, you would need to put all 3 in identical systems (except the motherboard/cpu) and be in the same room. My "guess" is exactly that.

My 2.4b P4 runs at 44c at 100% cpu utilization, 31c at about 5% utilization according to Intel's Active Monitor. (Intel Board, retail heatsink in an Antec Sonata case).

probably depends on which core for each
probably except the XP-mobile though.

really though, if you can afford AMD 64 or any remotely top end P4 I'd imagine you can afford a quality after market heatsink e.g. thermalright and a variable-speed fan if you're that concerned.

see here's the thing....im running an AMD 2600 barton NON MOBLIE CPU with a nice coolermaster fan and shin-etsu thermal compound. i can just feel the heat coming out of my case underneath my desk near my legs...and it heats up my room...im running DELL 2001FP btw...i want my temps LOWER tho then my current specs right below

32 F at idle
37 F at workload

You know, if you don't want your cooling system, I'll gladly take it off your hands.

Under 40, even celcius, at load? My bet is that the reading isn't right. That's what people are getting with the SP-97 and a 92mm fan so you won't be getting much cooler than that.

Under 40 while a processor is under load is pretty nice, I don't know what will give you lower than that. The A64 won't, mine is around 42 under load and 37 without.

My 2.8c @3.4 runs at 20c at idle and 32c at full load with stock heatsink minus thermal pad and useing grease. This is at 70f case temp.

A64s are defnitely cooler than P4Es....I think it might be a close draw between them and P4 though~

But the advantage that the A64 has is its cool n quiet technology where it adjust clockspeed/voltage on the fly so it'll cool down for ye ^^

though if we are talking uber-cool then definitely the P4m, but those laptops cost a pretty penny
