i am building a lynnfield system with a Core i7 860, Radeon 5850, and gigabyte UD3R motherboard...i have those parts so far and was wondering what kind of ram i should get? keep in mind this is a mid range system so im trying to stick with 4gb of ram, maybe 6 if the deal is really good

im really confused by all the speeds that are offered and if they make much of a difference in real world performance

I'd just get the cheapest RAM you can get tbh, I picked up 4gb for $70 and I'm sticking with that. At this point, RAM timings aren't really that big of a deal, you'll see a very low percentage of performance gained for a very high additional cost from the RAM if you want to go high end. So get the cheapest you can find, and spend a little more money on other things. For OCing, I'll just live with loose timings, and when the day comes that my timings are truly holding me back from playing the latest and greatest game, then I'll just build anew.

Forget triple channel (6GB), you're not buying the MB for it.
You're confused... Get this G.Skill kit and don't ask any questions.:laugh:

Thats a good price for that speed. Unless you are overclocking you wont need that much speed so you can probably save a few $$$ by going with 1600

cheapest ram you can get. ram has the absolute least impact on speed than any other single component in your PC.

well this topic is pointless now...i dumped my i7 860 and Gigabyte P33-UD3R for a 920 and ASRock X58 Extreme...i figure, pay 40 bucks more now, for a lot less headaches later, i was pushed over the edge when i found out that lynnfield boards ARE cheaper, on the low end atleast, but to get the x8/x8 slots you gotta pay $170+ anyway

i got sucked in by the initial hype of a new socket!

Incorrect. You need to use lower voltage 1.5-1.65v DIMMS with i5/i7.

1.5v is actually the standard for DDR3... and they actually released lower voltage ones that take 1.35.

Some rams taut guaranteed overclock / overvolted states with higher than 1.5v, but they default to 1.5v when placed in the socket... and you should know not to push them further on an i7

Nothing to do with Lynnfield or Core i7 or whatever. There are always particular DRAM ICs that require special BIOS tuning no matter the chipset. Its why you find BIOS updates with release notes indicating "enhance compatability" or "improve support" for certain Samsung/Micron/whatever DRAM", no matter the chipset.

Well that's good. I never buy the JEDEC-busting overvolted 'overclocking' or 'enthusiast' modules, anyway.
