so my dad starts bugging me to get him a draft n router. (he is in india). since the tech isn?t yet certified I haven?t even read most reviews nor been up to date on releases.

any suggestions which router and notebook card I should get for him. one which he hopefully doesn?t have to throw out in a year or so and works fairly solidly as it is today.

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. he has a decent 220 V to 110V convertor so thats not a problem.

How it possible to know this when there is No Standard.

The only reason to buy a Draft-N is if one needs desperately (for important functional purpose) more Bandwidth for LAN transfer.

Otherwise, it is a waste of money.

Well he is more of an enthusiast and is interested in tinkering aorund with it. I tried convincing him to wait but to no avail. hence I am off on this quest.

based on where we are right now which router would be a safe bet. a least in terms of the notebook card and the router itself working perfectly with each other. (which i guess they should)

Well send him this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833127215

The matching card is this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...5&Tpk=D-Link%2bDWA-652

If the Wireless does not work well at least he would be able to tinker with Giga Network.

Take into consideration that it does Not work well in mixed environment (i.e. with 802.11b/g).

Therefore, if he has more than one Wireless device you would have to send more Draft-N Cards.

-----------------------------
P.S. For functional purpose the above in part useless.

For the price the this cost one can buy two Buffalo Hight Power Wireless Routers, a Good Giga switch, and get more powerfull Wireless and better Giga.

I'm pretty much in the same spot as the OP's father and the Dlink stuff you linked to is probably at the top of my list or maybe waiting for the Dlink 855 within the next couple of months.

Your P.S.: Could you be specific as to which Buffalo routers and which "Good Giga switch" you are referring to, please?

Thanks!

Referring to: Buffalo High Power 802.11b/g

More explanation about the device here, http://www.ezlan.net/buffalo.html

Would something like this really perform well through say...at least two floors and probably a good 4000 or so square feet of overall distance?

I'm using a Netgear WGR614 right now and it's a decent enough router but the matching USB adapter that's two floors down performs almost downright pitifully at times.

There is never certainty with Wireless since it is depending on environmental factors too.

However, under normal circumstances two High Power units should be covering two floors.
