I have saved some funds to get a DVD burner. I have used Lite-On CD/RW and DVD-ROM drives exclusively in the past, but read a few reviews of the Lite-On SOHW-832S DVD-RW drive saying that the -R performance is bad and can cause frequent coasters. The review went on to say that a firmware upgrade could possibly fix the problems.
Another drive I've been looking at is the NEC ND-2510A, but dont know much about NEC products although the 2510 looks good from the reviews I've read.

newegg.com has the retail boxed Lite-On for $103.50 and a OEM version of the NEC for $84.99
Also they have Legacy brand 50 pack of DVD-R for $19.99 I was planning to try since I dont have alot of $$.

Anyways was just wondering which drive you think would be the better choice?

thanks

I think you would be just as happy with either one. I just bought the NEC 2510a and have not had a coaster yet. I think I would go with a different media like Ritek

Couldn't help but jump into this conversation since I'm considering a dvd burner as well. Seems like there's lots of burners in the same price range: (from newegg)

NEC 2510: 84.99
Nutechnology DDW 082: $72.99
Pioneer DVR-107: $84.99
Liteon 811s/LDW 851s: $70.99
Liteon SOHW-812s: 75.99
Toshiba SD-R5272: 74
Optorite DD0405: 64.99
Samsung SH-W08AEN 79.99

Seems like NEC is working well for people. Anandtech had good review of nutech after firmware update. Are there any that need to be avoided from the list, or others that work really well?

I have a BTC IM 1008, and so far the only complaint I have is slow writing in 8X DVD+R. On the positive side it allows bitsetting for DVD+R, very fast CD-R writer, very good write quality, excellent ripper for DVD / CD and maybe the feature I like the most: Accoustics management. BTC makes very quiet drives.

Burns at 4X are flawless (not a single coaster) and burn quality has been perfect so far. Maybe it helps that I only burn MXLG02 or TYG01 (also RICOHJPN if DVD+R is needed)

I think the field is evenly matched in DVD recorders. Remember, whatever you choose make sure to upgrade the firmware if it doesn't like your media.

NEC or Lite-On. Funny how these 2 companies manufacture the top 6 dvd burner brands in the market.

I've been happy with my NEC 2500A, considering that it's almost a 2510 I'd call it a safe bet.

I just ordered a NEC2510A last night. I have an Optorite DD-0203 currently and its a piece of junk. Successful burn percentage is about 60% on DVD-Rs. I just got a batch of the Ritek G04s last night and was excited to finally be able to burn at 4x. Well, 2 coasters in a row. Attempted to upgrade the firmware, but their flash program was unable to locate my drive. So I said screw it and just got the NEC instead.
