I'm about to get a DVD-ROM drive for my new Pentium III 700 MHz system. Any recommendation on which brand should I opt for?

Asus looks to have a winner(8x/40x) on egghead for ~$100. Other than that I'd probobly go with Pioneer.

well there are 12x/40x drives out now

http://123cdc.com/cdc/maxcdc.main has samsung drive for $99 and toshiba drive for $105 and I was planning to buy from them as soon as I can figure out whether to wait for DDR motherboards and get a tbird/750 or get a p3/733

any advice on that one?

I have a 10x Pioneer slot load (104S) it's a great drive.
Highly recommend Pioneer (though you probably want to get the 105S 16x).

(Both the 104S and 105S are 40x CDRoms as well)

I would go for the Pioneer 105s. Great drive, and slick slot loading. Only one problem that I've heard about this drive... Literally. it is a little loud.. but you can just turn up the volume...

So? Name one thing you can do with a 12x that you can't with an 8x. Speed isn't that important. While I wouldn't go for a 1x or 2x, anything over 8x is overkill now and for a while.

hmm.. I was debating between a 16X and a 10X Pioneer... the thing that's giving me trouble is the amount of noise.. what do you 10X owners out there think of the noise the 10X makes? I've heard the 16X and it is really lound on spin up and data transfer... and how about when playing movies? I'd assume that they'd be quiet since movies play at 1x?
Thanks in advance for your responses!

Pioneer 10x/40x (Tray or Slot load) these dries kick butt. AOpen also sells a remarked Pioneer (slot load and tray load) which has slightly better Firmware and is normally a few dollars cheaper.

I have a AOpen (remarked Pioneer) tray load and love it, DVD play back (software) is excellent, DAE is fast 12x, and 40x is plenty fast for any CD crap yer gonna do.

NEC 12x/40x is extremely quiet and read practically everything. It's a RPC-1, so you have to wait for someone to patch a RPC-2 firmware before you can read other region's DVD.

btw, the model is DV5700A. You can find it at fleabay. It's not that popular among those major retailers.

10x Pioneer slot load (104S) rocks

pickerd: the 104S makes an unbearable high sound when using data cd's, but it's very quiet when reading DVD's and audio cd's. I swear, it's REALLY unbearable to listen to data cd's, so I use my burner for game cd's, and the DVD drive for DVD/audio/install cd's. works nicely and the slot load is LOVELY. I'm really surprised this wasn't a hit earlier.
