Which dvd-rom to buy?

I am trying to figure out which DVD-rom is best to get. I am between a Lite-on 16x dvd-rom and a toshiba 16x dvd-rom. They are both about the same price at around $35. Im thinking the toshiba?

Hi,

I would suggest that you go with the LiteOn. If you do a search in the forums, you will find that a lot of people recommend the LiteOn optical drives over other brands because they are cheap as dirt, reliable and very fast. Do a couple of search in google, and you will find reviews about the liteon. Right now I have a liteon cdrw and I love it is great!

I'd go with the lite-on. I own several lite-on drives (one of them a dvd rom) and havn't had a problem with any of them. I think you'll find many other people on this board will say the same thing. I don't have anything against toshiba, but I stick with what works.

i gotta admit the liteon drive is faster and the audio ripping is one of fastest but only toshiba dvd rom can read DVD RAM discs AFAIK

lite-on, toshiba, pioneer all seem pretty solid. my pioneer dvd-115 is over two years old but works like a hoss.

How does the Asus 16x DVD stack up against these Lite-On recomendations? It seems that the Asus DVD drive has better seek times and it's ATA-100.

I've got a LiteOn 16x DVD and it works like a charm...

I have tried the all 16x Liteon DVDs: 163, 163D, and 165H. The 165H runs in DMA-3 mode according to the Intel Application Accelerator while the others run in DMA-2 mode. I am able RIP mp3 songs using Musicmatch Jukebox plus upto 48x and it does not slow down as much as the older DVD drives(163 and 163D). I have tried the Asus E616 drive. This drive takes a long time speed up and slows down halfway when ripping music. The only good thing about the Asus since it is ata100, you can connect this to an ata100 hard drive without losing any performance with the hard drive.

My pick would be the Liteon 165H. You can get this shipped to you for $39 from www.newegg.com. Great buy.

well, my vote goes for the Toshiba SD-M1612, deathly silent and plays everything i've thrown at it. Not sure about extraction speed, but quality's great. (it's for my HTPC)
