I have a question about OEM - it only comes with the drive right? Does that mean I'd have to buy the screws.. or it should come with them? What would I need extra if I have a DELL computer with a GCE-848B CD-RW drive. Thanks.

anybody know this? All the others are way too expensive. I can't spend too much.

What`s wrong with the black lite-On?.....link.,it`s retail version as well, good price at $64.Btw I`m using the USB 2.0 version which is solid on burning all discs that I`ve tried, also Lite-On have regular firmware updates as well.

Interested in this as well, I knew the NEC 3500 was well liked around here. Just wondered if there was anything better available.

Not to hijack this guys thread, but I also want to get my mom a CD burner for christmas. She doesn't need anything special, definately doesn't need DVD burning. SO whats the best bang for your buck on CD burners now a days? Please PM me with any answers. I don't want to steal this guys thread.

Edit, just checked newegg, and they have a Liteon 52x for 20.00 bucks. I like liteons, so maybe I will get that. Was kinda going for retail though, since the box does make it look a little better. If it was for me, I would go OEM. She would also need some decent burning software as well, which would come in a retail box, but not with OEM drives. Although I am sure I could always get some software off the net.

I second the Pioneer 108D. It works flawless. My buddy has the NEC 3500A and we both use generic media, some 8x media will burn at 8x only on his, but with my pioneer they do 12x flawlessly.

Honestly? Don't even bother. Buy her an NEC 3500A anyways. You can use it to rip, watch, and burn DVDs, and CDs. Eventually, DVD-burners will be standard equipment (if they aren't already - they mostly are with big-name OEMs).

Why invest in obsolete technology, unless you have a specific need to duplicate CDs at high speeds (52X), rather than the 32X most DVD burners burn CD-Rs at. Oh, and some copy-protected CDs cannot be duplicated properly with a DVD-burner, you need certain CD burners for them (Lite-On usually works). But those same games generally don't play in either type of burner, they check the hardware and detect if they are running from a burner and won't play. You need something like Daemon Tools just to play them, if all you own is a burner.

Wow, that's cheap. They should start bundling them for free along with newer DL DVD burners.

Check out the Nero Suite OEM CDs from softwareandstuff.com. They usually have some cheap. No matter what drive you get, Nero rocks!

Oh yeah, BestBuy has 25-packs of Fuji DVD-R (my store had ProDisc), and possibly DVD+R, on sale for $8.99, possibly $3.99, this week. HotDeals forum has more info.

Well she has no need to rip burn or watch DVD's on her computer. She has a DVD player, so I never see her watching a DVD on her computer, and she doesn't have very many DVD's as it is. All she wants is to be able to backup some of her auido CD's. The NEC and Nero suite software are 45.48 more expensive then just getting her the retail liteon. I just can't see a reason to spend the extra on a DVD burner, knowing there is only about a 2% chance she will ever use it as anything mroe then a DVD burner.

I will check out the media deal though, thanks
