I would say the only difference is the Optorite is a retail box, so that is the one I would go with.

Pardon me for not knowing what a retail box is - but what is it?

Retail box = retail packaging, with manual, software, screws, etc. Usually costs more than OEM.
OEM = Bare drive

Its means you get a "pretty box" you could mount on your wall to impress g00bery friends...instead of a plastic bag

Well, that and sometimes you only get instructions with a retail package. Being that IDE drives are so hard to plug in, this could be an issue.

Can someone please explain what exactly burn quality is and why it is so important? Or just point me to a site that expains this as I have been unable to find one. I hear everyone talk about burn quality, I don't understand what the implications are.

What is the main concern(s) of a drive that does not have good burn quality?

  • It will produce data discs that have incorrect data or are read incorrectly?
    It will produce discs that can't be read in all drives and DVD video players?
    The discs it produces will deteriorate, causing you to lose data?
    Something else?

I'm trying to decide whether to get a $40 BTC drive or get the NEC for $70. Does it matter that much? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you have the proper software and more than one burner (CD or DVD) can you burn more than one disc at a time?
