The US is not a Emprie. We have never ever conqured another country to expand our borders or for colonianism. If that was true the Grand Ole' flag would be flying over most of the countries in Europe, Japan, Iraq, Afganistan.

The mighitest empire was the Mongols. They were hard core mofos and if they went head to head with the roman legions the Italians would be eating Mongolian BBQ and speaking chinese.

although chinese empire survived and remained quite strong (besides some weak points) very long, even somewhat until today, when egyptians, romans and such have collapsed.

I beg to differ. Just because we as a country do not call our nation an empire does not mean that we have not committed imperialistic acts.
A great deal of the western states was been acquired via the Mexican-American war.
Guam was acquired via the Spanish-American War.

I'm not denouncing the U.S. as a terrible influence on the world. I'm just saying the U.S. is far from innocent in the department of imperialism.

Thus my opinion is that the U.S. has been and continues to be the most powerful empire simply because few nations possess the power to oppose it.

I also believe that the British empire could have sustained had they not been so unwilling to treat their subjects fairly.

1. The greatest empire in history was indeed the Roman empire. Depending on whether you include the Holy Roman Empire into equation, it last 1000 to 1500 years, no other empire comes close.

2. There was never a Mongolian empire. Mongols were nomads, meaning they were always on the move. They did conquer many lands, however, they rarely stayed anywhere for extended periods of time. Usually they would levy heavy tax or simply take everything they want and leave.

I vote America also, and heres why...

Are we an Empire in the strictest sense of the word?

Hell no.

We can project our power at a moments notice, truely anywhere in the known world. Our free society, and Democratic government bleed into every other countries way of life in some small way. If you arent American, you want to be American.(Except of course Canadians and thats really only because we own them but let them consider themselves independant of us, even though if someone attacked them, we'd end up defending their country. i.e. Puerto Rico) Also you'd have to dip a little into our history to see just how much of an empire we really couldve been, had we really wanted to be... In 1945 when Germany surrendered unconditionally, we had the power and the chance to ally with the remaining German forces and kick the living snot out of the Russians occupying eastern europe. We Chose Not To. Whether this was a good or bad thing will be debated by those with more time and interest. But the shear fact of the matter is, we COULD have been the biggest, and most powerful Empire ever to grace the earth with its presence, but for the freedom of choice to allow those who were weaker than us, to rebuild and retool themselves into the independant countries they now are. Its also true of what couldve been in Japan, had we wanted to take it over for good. Who wouldve stopped us? Who couldve stopped us? Britain? Russia? China?

Nah, simply put, we ARENT an empire because we choose to co-exist with those around us peaceably. (Some might wish to debate this point also)

So the way I see it is this: We're the most Empirical, Non-Empire ever to be in existence.

The Roman empire wasn't the most powerful but it's rise and fall did have a big impact on lint picking machines.

I think everyone is grouping the wrong post "classical" Roman empire in here. The Holy Roman Empire should NOT be grouped in with the Roman Empire. the HRE was largely a land-based Germanic empire with almost no similarities to the classical Roman empire.

However, the "Byzantine Empire" as we call it, is a direct successor to the Roman Empire, it was in fact, the Eastern Roman Empire and lasted until 1453 (with a few stops along the way).

So thats my vote. The Roman Empire, which in some form lasted until 1453.

Though the British Empire was pretty damn impressive for a dinky island nation.

Tagej, how long did the Mongols' empire last? I think the amount of land conquered, how long the kingdom lasted, and how much influence it had in cultures and systems as we know them today should be factored when deciding the most powerful empire.

The Mongol Hordes rules a vast part of the world for about 150 years. The conquered most of China, and all the the way into parts of modern day Germany -- and everything in between. That's pretty impressive.

Still the Roman empire lasted for hundreds of years, conquering vast parts of the world. The US "empire" doesn't even come close for many reasons. While the US is the lone 'superpower' (economic and military), it does NOT have the power to conquer and control most of the known world and hold it for centuries. We're talking centuries folks. The US military is not designed for that, it's a mobile force, but simply not big enough to conquer, occupy and subjugate countries. If we were to make our military large enough to do so, our economy would suffer. Further, the US's "dominant" position in the world hasn't even lasted for 50 or 60 years yet. Who knows what the next 200 years will bring. Perhaps then someone will look back and compare "empires".

Take nukes out of the equation, and there's no way the U.S. could conquer as much of the world as the Romans did (the world as they knew it). The main advantages the U.S. have over most of the other countries in the world militarily is technology and money. If the Romans existed in this time period, they'd have the same advantages. But as I'm writing this, it strikes me that it's really hard to compare empires from different eras, because they eached shaped the world that subsequent ones existed in.

I'm gonna say the mongols and genghis khan. I read an article awhile back about how something like 8% of the people in the conquered Mongol area today can trace their blood back to genghis khan. Something like 16 million descendants. If that isn't conquering...

Another vote for our friend Genghis. The largest empire in history and millions of direct descendants is the very definition of pwn463!

There really is only ONE way to solve this issue. Fire up Civilization, put in the US, Mongols, Romans, Chinese and the British, and let them duke it out.
