The Pentax is a great camera. Personally, I went with a Sony A100 and I am quite happy with it, but the Pentax was not available at the time. Pentax is a well-respected name in cameras and I cannot think of a reason why one would want to avoid them.
In truth, my recommendation is to find which camera fits best in your hand and buy that one. There really aren't any "dud" cameras out there right now.

I can think of one. They don't have anywhere near the selection of lenses that Canon or Nikon have. I've looked into this and Pentax doesn't even have 1/3rd of the lenses that Canon or Nikon make and I didn't see a single fast Pentax zoom lens in their lineup. If you plan to shoot sporting events, do portrait work or macro work you might as well forget Pentax.
My vote goes to Canon (since I own Canon gear) but you couldn't go wrong with Nikon either.
Canon also has tons of overlap in their lens selection. If you take that into consideration it will cut the lineup drastically.
Again, Pentax has what...7 zoom lenses (not a single zoom under f/4) and 11 primes (including 1 macro lens) and zero telephoto zooms. Not exactly a stellar lineup IMO.
Canon has primes in just about every combination you could possibly want. They have decent inexpensive primes, faster better quality primes and then they have their L series primes which are top notch. Same with the zoom lenses.
You've got to be sh!tting me. Do some research before you open your mouth.
I was looking through the B&H catalog this morning and that's all I counted so STFU. Looking at the B&H website there weren't many more options...unless you count the US version and the import version as two lenses.
Okay, I just checked out the Pentax website and they offer a grand total of 29 lenses. Again, zero fast zoom lenses and zero telezoom lenses...as I pointed out earlier. I think B&H left the uber expensive Pentax telephoto lenses out of their catalog probably because almost nobody buys them.
I think Canon has around 70 different lenses with plenty of fast zooms and a wide variety of choices. I'm just pointing that out so that someone doesn't buy this camera and then regret it later because of the slim choice of lenses. I've only seen one or two people point that out in the many "What DSLR camera should I buy" threads I've seen on here. Funny how the "OMG IT'S WEATHER SEALED JUST LIKE THE $5000 PRO BODIES FROM NIKON AND CANON!!!" crowd always seem to overlook that fact. I couldn't help but notice that you didn't mention it.
