Which GPU for Fallout 4?

I'm hoping to pick up Fallout 4 (finally) in the near future, and I am building a PC pretty much just for that. I have an i3-6100 and 8GB of RAM. I need a graphics card for under $100. Right now, I have a 550 Ti but that's a little light and I am hoping to upgrade.

I want to play on High settings with a 900p monitor. I don't need super smooth 60 FPS, in fact I'm willing to sacrifice FPS a little bit, 30-40 is good enough. I'm looking at one of these options: 660, 660 Ti, 760, or 950. What do you guys think would be best?

Good point. I didn't know about the GameWorks features.

Think I will either pick up a 950 or wait for the 1050 to drop, since it's coming so soon.
If $100 is the price cap the 950 is going to be the best bet for the next couple of months in all probability. The 1050 will be artificially inflated for the first month or so and I will be surprised to see it under $100 before black friday at earliest. But that is speculation, if you are willing to wait, it may be worthwhile.

Asus has 2 950s under $100 final cost right now, no power connector models. I always ask myself how much does someone need to pay me to keep me from playing the game I want to play now. The answer is always more than the money saved or performance boost that waiting can bring with them.

I doubt we will see a 1000 series card under $100 before Christmas.

Still, I would advise against buying a really cheap GPU and saving up a bit more to get a decent one. The 970s are hovering around $300 right now and I'm sure you can grab one for really cheap around Black Friday which is right around the corner. Not to mention, with us being so close to Black Friday, it would be silly to buy anything at this point in time when you can get it cheaper here in a month and a half.

I have been waiting since last year to play Fallout 4. Not that it's a big deal, mind you - good games don't have an arbitrary lifespan. I waited for Skyrim and I can wait for Fallout 4. My main sensibility is when FPS or poor graphics are enough to ruin game immersion, and I don't foresee that being a problem here with the i3-6100 I picked up. I didn't, however, want to play on my old G3258 or i5-2400.

Although the 1050 is the best of the two choices, I think you are right about the pricing and performance boost not being worth the wait, so think it's time to start looking for 950s. Not going to purchase retail, more like an $80 Craigslist special.

I thought I'd use this thread to mention the Hi Res Textures coming out for Fallout 4 this week. Looks like a beefy Gpu is needed for this DLC. But I'll wait for comments about the textures from this forum before download it. I mean why bother to install it if it doesn't really improve the textures imo.

Don't underrate that i5-2400! I've got three in my fleet and they do very well! DigitalFoundry did comparisons of the old stock clock i5-2500 vs new i3-6100 and the two were tied almost the entire time, sometimes leaning to the i5 for more multithreaded games. FO4 was pretty CPU heavy so the older i5 will perform at least equal or a tiiiiny bit better.

Get the video card sorted out yet? FO4 has gone on sale through Steam a few times now. Keep it on your Steam watchlist and snag the next one - the $20 saved can go in the video card budget.

Yeesh. The frickin game already runs "meh" on my i6700K and R390 with 16GB RAM on 1080p resolution and high graphics (not maxed) so I'm not even interested in higher quality textures. :-/ I guess if you have a Cray supercomputer you'd be psyched, heh (plus you can use one for a lot of porn).

I haven't had any significant speed issues running an HD390, i5-2500K, & 8GB RAM. But once it gets hot, my MSI HD390 artifacts like crazy, with fine objects such as trees and bushes turning into often-colorful blobs and sometimes not resolving until I could literally touch them. I think the stock fan profile is waaaay too optimistic. When I have some time, I need to research how to set up a custom fan profile in a way that will not nuke my card when the driver updates.

What about a used 290? Before I got my 480 I used a 290x and the game played great at 1080p.

can you save up money? Play it on low settings, and then get a used card down the road? Sub 100 reallly isn't going to treat you well.
