they are the same thing pretty much. ata100 vs ata133 is NOT noticeable. they are both fast drives i have one of each (actually 120gb maxtor but same specs) and i notice NO difference whatsoever so go for the WD.

Maxtor will be quieter though.

Speed will be about the same. But with the warranty and lower price, go WD.

I believe that the WD can be had this weekend from OfficeMax for $20 after rebates. Check out the HotDeals section.

Don't get the western digital if you want a quiet PC.

Seagate or the new Hitachi drives are the only drives I will consider right now.

I have a Diamondmax Plus 9 200GB and both of my WD SE 120GB drivers are quieter. I don't know why so many people say Maxtor's are quieter than WD's. In my case, I hear the opposite.

WDs, because they're not fluid bearing get louder over time.

Get the western Digital. It has a better warranty and costs less. My personal preference is Seagate.

I have several of both, prefer the maxtor for quiet performance, but like the 3 year WD warranty, so the last 3 I have picked up were WD. If price is important and you live near an Officemax, they had the 80 gig WD with 1 year warranty on special for $19.95 after two $30 mail in rebates. I still have a brand new 3 year warranty Western Digital waiting to replace my last non 80 gig hard drive, so I haven't tried to score one of the Omax specials. I do believe it is the hottest hard drive deal I have ever seen.

I love you...Im the same way

WD is always the wrong decision------loud, short lived, but yes not slower than the other options

Maxtor is fine. I have no problem with them,

but I prefer hitachi's cutting edge features and tech (IE head load/offload) And seagates immense research and testing. not to mention the quietest hard drives avalible. You may think quiet is not that important....but in order to be quiet, it has to be designed to closer tolerences and standards, that can easliy equate to longevity. seagate is also the only SATA drive I would touch. The half assed approach to SATA from EVERY OTHER brand kinda makes me angry.

I like WD for some reason. I've never had a problem with thier drives. Only recently have I had a 2gb HD from WD fail on me becuase of bad sectors. But I bought that back in 1997.
