Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a new hard drive, currently it's a choice between
Seagate 120GB 7200 rpm (ST380023A) and IBM (or Hitachi now) Deskstar 180GXP 120GB 7200rpm.

I just want a reliable and not too noisy drive!

Any help appreciated

I have another Seagate and it's also very quiet, I've only had it for 6 months but so far no problems.

I'm a bit weary of IBM drives since reading the thread provided by Thorin. It also made me look at WD drives but my concern is the noise. Do the WD drves also use fluid bearings?

I'm trying to compare the Seagate and the WD but the Seagate acoustics are rated in (2 / 3 / 3.5) bells and the WD in dBa (34 / 36 / 35). How does this relate?

the WD is not as quiet as the seagate, but it has higher performance
the WD uses fluid dynamic bearings too

I cant here mine at all either, i cant even tell if its working or not even except for the LED on the front of my case. So concerning noise level of the WD SE drives that are not defective id say its almost a non issue, if other drives make less noise i wouldnt even be able to tell unless i put my ear against the case. The only thing in my entire case that is annoying in terms of noise is when my Lite-On 48X CD-RW spinns up, after its going its fine but it puts out an awfull whine getting started. I mean my P4 2.53 stock heatsink/fan makes enough noise to dround out the HD noise and those who have one know its not very loud at all.

I can't even hear the WD drive when my ear IS up to the case... i really love the hard drive.
and yeah, CD-ROMs (faster ones) spinning up are always a pain.

Actually i never tried the ear thing before, let me give it a whirl and see.........hmm i can...almost hear something going on.... a faint ticking over the hum of the fans with my ear to the case....wait......no...cant even tell if thats just in my head wanting and trying to hard to hear something

Well, if it's that close I suppose it doesn't matter. With all the cooling fan noises I probably won't hear anything anyway. I just hate that grrrr, grrrr sound some hard drives make. It sounds like metal on metal.

Then it comes down to reliability and from what I heard from the other thread above, the WD doesn't have issues.

Thanks everyone

Gotta add my .02
WD1200JB is so quiet, I have to look at my HD light to see when it is actually doing something.

Can't hear it at all.

Agreed 100%

Thorin

Latest data on the 80GB platter Maxtor DM 9+ Ultras with 8MB cache seem to indicate otherwise....full reviews are expected shortly.
