I cant here mine at all either, i cant even tell if its working or not even except for the LED on the front of my case. So concerning noise level of the WD SE drives that are not defective id say its almost a non issue, if other drives make less noise i wouldnt even be able to tell unless i put my ear against the case. The only thing in my entire case that is annoying in terms of noise is when my Lite-On 48X CD-RW spinns up, after its going its fine but it puts out an awfull whine getting started. I mean my P4 2.53 stock heatsink/fan makes enough noise to dround out the HD noise and those who have one know its not very loud at all.

I can't even hear the WD drive when my ear IS up to the case... i really love the hard drive.
and yeah, CD-ROMs (faster ones) spinning up are always a pain.
