They are all the same, Hitachi, Seagate, WD, Samsung or Toshiba...it truly makes no difference. And don't let anyone tell you differently, they are just pimping what they own and pushing their personal preference. Just choose a fat cache, 7200rpm and back up your data.

Good post. I actually prefer 5400RPM most of the time for storage (depending on the cost per GB). Its plenty fast unless you are really needing the extra RPM.

All brands use many of the same internal parts. That's why the Thailand floods were so bad for the hard drive industry.

Seagate or WD. Don't they pretty much own all the other brand hard drives?

Not to mention cooler running, quieter and generally a little more reliable then higher RPM drives...

Hitachi drives have traditionally been slower and quieter than other drives. I couldn't hear mine at all. I put a pair of Blue's in their place and the difference in sound level is astonishing.

I own at least 3 of each... they all work. Find whatever is on sale that meets your storage needs with adequate capabilities. I don't really care about warranties... I just assume they are all going to fail unexpectedly and turn into paperweights, so I backup my data accordingly.

The Seagate 4Tb 4000DM series is going for $189, Hitachi's best 4Tb had hit $199 months ago but is now selling in the $250 range.

If you're building NAS boxes, those usually have some 'smarts' to them that best-use WD Reds or Blacks, although higher-end Seagates offer those "enterprise" electronics, too.

Toshiba's just delivered their 3Tb drives in the last 4 months, and have a 4Tb ready, and those prices should be between Seagate's DM series (SATA-III, 5400rpm, large cache) and the Hitachi-WDs.

If you're doing motherboard based RAIDs, then most anything works. NAS boxes and some higher-end RAID controllers 'need' some fancier, 'enterprise' type electronics for HD monitoring purposes. If you're going to do RAIDs, we always recommend buying one spare unit to leave 'cold' just in case of replacement. In a year or two, "consumer" type drives will have electronic differences that can alter the behavior of the RAID system.

I'll also go with Klein's "it's all a crap shoot" argument - I doubt seriously that any product line is more or less prone to failure on a significant statistical basis. We consumers don't count - our One's and Two's failures don't matter - but national distributors that move 100,000 units a week - when THEY have to receive back Bad Units, those tally up quickly and they dump on those manufacturers big-time.

With the loss of Hitachi's independence (well, they were IBM, then Hitachi stole/bought them up, now WD's got them), we should be happy to see Toshiba return to the marketplace in a big way. We really need a larger variety of brands out there.

HDD prices have been so high for a couple of years now, and we need to get those to plummet significantly, and capacities to increase. The Pre-Flood Days (Sep 2011) saw the delivery of the first 3Tb Hitachis ($139 retail) and we're only NOW seeing that price being lowered ($119 on limited sales). This two-year lag between significant capacity improvements hopefully will pick up speed.

Any proof?

NAME THAT TUNE!
Where can we read (besides these posts), that they are more reliable?

It does make a difference if you care about warranties and a few other factors.
That is why Black drives still have 5 year warranty, most all seagate drives have 1 year warranty.
If segate don't want to back any of their drives like WD does, then ... their loss.

Seagate upped the warranty to match WD, they are now the same.

I have a 500 GB Hitachi hard drive and it performs quit well for a platter. It's speed is faster than other platters I have owned over the years. Recently though I heard a what sounded like a spin down and spin up from the drive. So I checked the SMART data and did a surface scan and found nothing. Don't know if it's on the way out the door or not. Really bothers me as that is my programs install drive for use with the SSD as the main drive.

Question... Are enterprise drives more reliable than the normal top tier consumer grade drives (WD black)?

I want a reliable drive setup and I'm currently evaluating two setups:
1) single 2TB 7200rpm WD RE4 enterprise drive with no backup
2) 2TB 7200rpm WD black drive with a cheap seagate or hitachi 2TB 5400rpm backup drive.

Which is the more reliable solution?

Put down that pipe...
Any option with a 2nd drive for backup would be the "more reliable solution".

Seagate is best bang for your buck right now.

Agreed. The 1TB, 2TB & 3TB Seagates with the 1TB platters are just, plain fast and they run only about 3 degrees hotter than my WD Greens. Mine are fairly new so I can't verify long term reliability but they haven't had a single glitch in a few months of use.
